CALGARY – A three-goal fourth quarter for the Victoria Vikes led the way to a 5-0 victory over the University of Calgary Dinos women's field hockey team Saturday afternoon at Hawkings Field.
Calgary did well in limiting the reigning Canada West and U SPORTS Champions, but the strong final frame powered Victoria to the win to move to 1-0 on the year. The Dinos drop to 0-3.
"There was a little bit of a lack of focus, a little bit of the youngsters, and it was a hard quarter," Dinos head coach
Jenn Beagan said, regarding the final quarter.
"Something that we will definitely have to go back and do a little bit of reflection and watch some video and solve some problems, but I think they started to play individually and less like a team."
After an uneventful first 15 minutes on the scoresheet, the Vikes finally penetrated the home team's defense in the 21st minute off a redirected dump into the shooting circle, which ended up popping over Dinos' goalie
Micaela Camacho's pad. Camacho additionally had a huge diving save with just under five minutes remaining in the first half when the Vikes broke down the pitch on a breakaway.
Vikes' goaltender Anais Chace also made a significant save to close out the half when the Dinos managed to find an open woman in the circle before coming up empty on the scoreboard.
With a goaltending switch on the home side,
Madison Forest was tested early in her half but had no issues blocking out the Vikes and keeping the game at a 1-0 deficit. It was in the 38th minute when the visitors extended their lead thanks to defender Libby Hogg who squeaked a shot in to make it 2-0.
"We made a lot of changes in our tactics and structure this week after watching video from UBC last weekend, and we worked through a lot of different patterns and different structures in training this week, which is new for them," Beagan mentioned.
"They came out really focused on that and ready to play, and in the second half they lost focus on their new way of playing and they started going back to what they were used to before."
A quick fourth quarter progression from the Vikes started with catching the Dinos defense watching, which they had no problem capitalizing on the opportunity, before a swift give-and-go occurred down the line to push the Vikes up 4-0, with both goals courtesy of forward Jaden Dawson.
Although Forest made an incredible effort in stopping two Vikes on her own in the concluding minutes of the game, the fifth and final goal was just out of reach as Hogg blasted one past for her second of the game.
"It's going to take a process," Beagan stated. "It's a very young team and we just keep pushing forward and we just keep working and learning. As long as we continue on this upward trajectory, the future looks really bright here."
Both teams will look for a rematch at 11 a.m. from Hawkings Field on Sunday.
