Competition heats up as Dinos hit the field for spring camp

CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos football team returns to the field next week for its annual spring camp, running April 28 to May 4 at Shouldice Athletic Park.

While McMahon Stadium undergoes field renovations, this year's camp will occur at Hellard Field and Stampeder Field, with eight on-field sessions open to the public. The week will conclude with a scrimmage at Rundle College.

The camp marks a key stage in the evaluation process for Dinos head coach Ryan Sheahan as he looks to increase internal competition ahead of the 2025 season.

"October feels like forever ago and a lot has changed since then," said Sheahan.

"The staff has done a great job recruiting their butts off. There's a lot of new blood coming in here. There will be a lot of competition and evaluation, and we're inching closer towards our goal of making this team very difficult to make."

At this time last year, Sheahan was still transitioning into his role new role. With a full season now under their belt, the camp will allow the staff to assess the results of winter training and a large recruiting class.

"I stuck to my guns last year and evaluated what we had, and it took some time to do that. I don't think I could fully assess what we had until I evaluated them through in-season competition," he said.

"Our efforts were sometimes good, but not good enough. I was happy that I gave them the time to show what they could do. It gave me and the staff a chance to see where we needed to make improvements.

"The backbone of this program has always been competition. We're about to see if we got the right people to fill the spots we needed filled."

In addition to spring camp, the Dinos will have their eye on the CFL Draft, set for April 29 at 4 p.m. MT. Calgary's draft-eligible players are headlined by U SPORTS defensive player of the year Nate Beauchemin.

In May, the next crop of CFL prospects will take the stage at the 2025 East-West Bowl, where four Dinos — Ben Dobson, Franklin Ibelo, Osasere Odemwingie and Brayden Szeman — will showcase their talents.
