EDMONTON – The reigning Canada West Women's Track Athlete of the Year was at it again Friday.
Sienna MacDonald – a fourth year for the Calgary Dinos track & field program – ran the 12th fastest time in the world so far this year in the 60m hurdles in the first day of competition at the ninth annual Pandas Open inside the Butterdome.
MacDonald – who already holds the Dinos' program in the 60m hurdles at 8.16 seconds – set the track on fire in the prelims of the event Friday with an eye-popping time of 7.97 second. That time now ranks MacDonald tied for 12th globally and is a mere 0.03 seconds shy of the qualifying standard for the World Athletics Indoor Championships scheduled for March 21-23 in Nanjing, China.
Proving that prelim time was no fluke, MacDonald clocked a winning time of 8.00 flat in the 60m hurdle finals, which would have ranked 17th in world this year.
MacDonald wasn't done there, though. The Airdrie, Alta., product also launched to the top of the national leader board in long jump with a winning leap of 6.23m – by far the top mark in U SPORTS so far this season and well above her own school record of 6.04m.
"Sienna's performance at this stage has been exceptional, and she's in excellent form for this time in the season," combined events coach and Dinos Hall of Fame member Les Gramantik said. "She's been consistent in her training, more committed than ever, and maintains a high level of professionalism."
Added head coach
Jessica Zelinka: "It's been rewarding to watch her over the years - she's having a great time and fully embracing her role as an outstanding teammate. We're excited about her progress and the positive impact she's having on the program."
Natasha Gatzke also had a nice performance in the 60m hurdles, finishing second on the night with a season-best time of 8.51 seconds that now ranks her sixth in U SPORTS on the year.
Sarah Feschuk won the pentathlon competition. The second year sat in last place through the first three events, but had the top marks in both long jump (5.31m) and the 800m (2:22.27) to surge ahead of the tight field and finish with 3454 points – 98 points ahead of second place.
Max Cook led a pack of Dinos in the men's 1000m, taking third in 2:31.18.
Phoenix Bouma was close behind in sixth at 2:32.16, while rookie
Kai Deausy placed seventh in 2:33.10.
It was a big night in the women's 300m.
Georgia Oland posted the top time in prelims with a blazing time of 38.42 - her personal best and the fastest time in U SPORTS this season.
Emma Parnetta crossed the line in 40.87, while
Kristen Fox had a big time drop on the night, crossing the line in 42.65 in the 300m prelims before lowering that down to 41.52 in finals to place fifth overall.
In field events,
River Sanoy had a strong, consistent night and finished fourth overall with a mark of 7.09m on his second attempt – placing him in the top-12 of the U SPORTS rankings in the event.
Tristan Friesen continued his strong third year with a second-place finish in shot put. Friesen uncorked a throw of 15.85m – a new personal best – on his second attempt to finish just five centimeters behind the winning mark.
Alex Wahl finished fourth on the afternoon at 13.80m, while
Matthew Minchin was sixth at 13.34m.
Danae MacKenzie and
Raluca Badau closed out the night for the Dinos in pole vault. MacKenzie cleared the bar at 3.41m for third place overall, while Badau closed out at 3.26m for fifth place.
Day two from the Pandas Open kicks off at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, with the two-day meet scheduled to wrap up in the afternoon.
