CALGARY – After another strong weekend of competition, the University of Calgary Dinos wrestling program swept this week's Canada West BioSteel Athlete of the Week awards.
Maya Johnston and
Brantley Saar were selected as this week's honourees, as announced by the conference office Tuesday afternoon.
It was a perfect 4-0 weekend for Johnston at the 2025 Pronghorn Invitational in Lethbridge this past weekend.
Johnston - the reigning U SPORTS bronze medallist - showed she is once again one of the top wrestlers at her weight class. The local product started off with a 10-0 tech fall win in her opening bout that only seemed to get her going. Johnston posted a 10-0 win over Saskatchewan's Lexa Barous before a 12-1 win over Anna Trieu of Alberta. In her final match of the weekend, Johnston closed things out with a pin over Lethbridge's Hailey Arsenault in just over 90 seconds of competition.
This already marks Johnston's second tournament win this season with one more outing on the calendar before the 2025 Canada West Championships on Feb. 14.
Meanwhile, it was a perfect final homecoming for Saar, as the fifth-year senior claimed the gold medal at the 82kg weight class Saturday.
Saar - a product of Lethbridge - was a man on a mission, winning all three of his bouts without surrendering a single point. He opened the weekend with an 11-0 tech fall win in a tidy 1:33 before duplicating that score in a mere 47 seconds his next time out. Saar completed the sweep of the round robin with a 10-0 tech-fall win in 1:58 to close things out and bring home the gold medal.
Calgary is now off until Jan. 17, when they will head to Edmonton for the Golden Bear Invitational.
