EDMONTON – In the final competition before next month's Canada West Championships, the University of Calgary Dinos wrestling teams once again put a strong foot forward at the annual Golden Bear Invitational, hosted by the University of Alberta.
Powered by first-place finishes in five of the 10 weight divisions, Calgary's women's team cruised to a team title with 61 points on the day – 16 points ahead of host Alberta for the top spot. The Dinos men also did well, finishing the day with 31 points to narrowly miss a second-place finish.
Maya Johnston (53kg),
Gabriela Cross (56kg),
Annika Fines (62kg),
Elizabeth Latulippe (65kg) and
Angelina Ellis-Toddington (68kg) all finished first in their respective weight classes in a show of strength for the Dinos.
Calgary continued to show off its depth on the women's side, with
Ankita Singh, Sophia Povagenuc and
Clara Smithanik all also bringing home medals.
On the men's side,
Mark Schwichtenberg (76kg) and
Brantley Saar (82kg) both finished second overall and as the top university wrestler in their respective divisions.
Connor Bren also had a strong showing, placing third at the 100kg weight class.
The Dinos now turn their attention to championship wrestling, starting Feb. 14 with the 2026 Canada West Championships, hosted this year by Alberta.
