It's a battle of heavyweights as the University of Calgary Dinos men's hockey team (8-2) hosts Saskatchewan (6-2) for two games inside Father David Bauer Arena this weekend. The action starts Friday at 7 p.m., with Saturday's rematch set for a 6 p.m. puck drop.
Despite graduating well over half of its entire roster from a season ago, the Dinos are off to a surprising 8-2 start to the season and sit atop the East Division in Canada West as we near the halfway point of the regular season. It's been a balanced attack that has gotten it done for Calgary thus far. Adam Kydd (19 points) and Jake Poole (15 points) lead the league in scoring thus far, but 20 different Dinos already have registered at least one point this season, including 16 different players finding the back of the net.
The Huskies come to Calgary just four points back of a tie for the division lead with two less games played. Saskatchewan won the conference title last season and were preseason favourites to repeat. Chantz Petruic is the early league leader with nine goals scored through his first eight games played.
This marks the first of two weekend sets between Calgary and Saskatchewan this season, with a rematch in Saskatoon set for early February. Last season, the teams faced off just two times all year, with the Huskies winning both at FDB in the second week of last year's regular season. The Dinos are 7-3 in the last 10 regular season showdowns in the series, and the two teams did square off in Saskatchewan in the preseason, with each team claiming a one-goal win.

Calgary's women's hockey team (6-3-1) hits the road for the first full weekend road trip in over a month as they head to Saskatchewan (4-2-2) for games Friday and Saturday from Merlis Belsher Place. Friday's opener is set for a 6 p.m. MT start, while Saturday's start time is scheduled for 4 p.m. MT.
For the fourth time out of five opportunities this season, the Dinos are coming off a weekend split as they posted a convincing 2-1 win over MacEwan this past Thursday before suffering a hard-luck 1-0 OT loss in Friday's rematch. While they have been oh-so-close to weekend sweeps on a number of ocassions, Calgary still sits in first place in the East Division of Canada West through its first 10 games with a 6-3-1 record for 13 points - one ahead of Mount Royal and three clear of Saskatchewan.
While the Dinos played their first overtime game of the season last time out, the Huskies have gone to OT in three of their eight games, with latest win over Manitoba coming via a shootout. Saskatchewan is led offensively by Jayde Cadieux with five points thus far. Three Huskies have already seen time in net this season, with Colby Wilson getting the majority of starts and coming off a 45-save performance in a shootout win over the Bisons.
The Dinos swept the Huskies in just two games played last season, winning 3-1 and 4-1 early in the year at Merlis Belsher. Calgary has now won the last five overall against the UofS, starting with a playoff series win back in 2024. Saskatchewan makes the return trip to Calgary in the penultimate weekend of the regular season.

Friday's opener is set for a 7 p.m. MT tip time, with Saturday's start scheduled for 6 p.m. MT. Both games will follow the Dinos' women's games.
Calgary is coming off a pair of hard-fought road wins in Lethbridge on the opening weekend. Despite trailing the majority of Game 2, head coach Dan Vanhooren has to be pleased with his young team's early ability to go up against adversity. Not to mention the play of Mrigendra Dhaliwal. The rookie from Calgary poured in 37 points in just his second ever U SPORTS game - the single game high-point leader in the nation in the early going.
Brandon has its own flame thrower in fifth-year combo guard Sultan Haider-Bhatti. The Laval, Que., product is averaging 25.3 points per game through three games, pouring in 27 points on 11-22 shooting to go with 10 rebounds and five assists in an 85-72 loss at Lethbridge this past Saturday.
Brandon has proven to be a tough place to play for Calgary over recent years, dropping their last three regular season games there, including a weekend sweep back in November of 2023. The two teams met in Calgary last season, with the Dinos steamrolling to a pair of wins, 111-69 and 100-87. Calgary is 7-3 in the last 10 regular season games against the Bobcats.

The Dinos won the first two games under first-year head coach Sarah Besselink with a weekend sweep at Lethbridge last time out before a bye week last weekend. Calgary trailed 65-64 in the fourth quarter of the season opener before grinding out an 80-70 win, responding with a dominant 83-52 win the next night.
The Bobcats come into the weekend at 3-1, with wins against Manitoba (86-71), Winnipeg (79-65) and Lethbridge (69-65), while also dropping a game to the Pronghorns (84-77). Three players are averaging scoring in double figures in the early going for Brandon, led by second-year guard Macaya Copeland with 23.0 points per game.
It has been a one-sided affair of late in this head-to-head series, with Calgary claiming 33 of the last 35 conference games. Brandon's last win over Calgary came back on Nov. 17, 2017 with a 69-53 performance at home. Last season, the Dinos cruised to a pair of wins, 99-66 and 96-62, after eclipsing the century mark in a weekend sweep in Brandon the previous year.

The Dinos men's volleyball team (2-2) hits the road for a second consecutive weekend, traveling to Langley, B.C. to take on Trinity Western (4-0) Friday at 8 p.m. MT and Saturday at 6 p.m. MT. Both matches are set to follow the women's competitions.
Calgary will look for a bounce-back performance after getting swept by Manitoba in both games this past weekend. Errors doomed the Dinos all weekend long, as they hit .000 and finished with 25 errors in Thursday's loss before finishing with 17 service errors in Friday's three setter. Sam Kay had a strong showing in the finale, tallying a game-high 12 kills while hitting .524.
Things will not get easier for Calgary, as Trinity Western comes into the weekend a perfect 4-0, taking down eighth-ranking Winnipeg, 3-1, 3-1, this past weekend. Fourth-year outside Kaden Schmidt leads all of Canada West in the early going with nearly six kills per set on a .451 hitting clip.
The Dinos split a weekend series with the Spartans in Calgary last season, earning a 3-0 sweep back in January. That ended an 18-game losing streak to TWU that dated back to February of 2016.

Over the course of a season, some wins are bigger than others and that is certainly true of Calgary's 3-0 sweep of reigning national champion Manitoba on Saturday to earn a weekend split on the road against the Bisons. One night after Manitoba could seemingly do no wrong, the Dinos responded and forced 24 errors by the Bisons as they racked up 11 total blocks in the convincing sweep to move to 2-2 on the young season.
Trinity Western enters the weekend sitting at 4-0 with a trio of 3-0 sweeps to go with a five-set win over Winnipeg to start the conference slate. Fourth-year outside Maryn Boldon leads the nation with 5.17 kills per set thus far, while hitting an impressive .309.
Calgary earned a weekend split with TWU last year - marking the second straight season with a win over the Spartans. Both of those series took place in Calgary, as the Dinos haven't played a regular season game in Langley since November of 2022.

The Dinos have five national championship banners in cross country, with the men going back-to-back in 2018 and 2019 as the most recent success.
After the conclusion of Saturday's race, the Dinos will turn their attention to the track and field season, which kicks off Dec. 7 inside the Jack Simpson Gym with the Dino Opener.
