The new-look Dinos will look to keep things rolling after their perfect start to the season as they take on city rival Mount Royal for a home-and-home this weekend. The first Crowchild Classic will take place on Calgary's campus at Father David Bauer Friday night at 7 p.m. Saturday's rematch is scheduled for a 5 p.m. puck drop from Flames Community Arenas.

Calgary opened the 2025-26 season in emphatic fashion, dominating Regina for a combined 16-4 two-game sweep. That success drew the eye of voters, as the Dinos open the year at No. 10 in the first U SPORTS top 10 of the year.

Coming into the new year, it was hard to predict where the points would come from after graduating a whopping 71% of their scoring from a season ago. The result so far - an incredibly balanced four lines that saw 18 different Dinos add their name to the score sheet in just the first two games. In fact, 10 different players already have two or more points, with veterans Jake Poole (2 goals, 4 assists) and Adam Kydd (1 goal, 5 assists) leading the way in the early going.

MRU comes into the weekend at 1-1 after an opening split with Saskatchewan in a 2025 Canada West Final rematch. The Cougars were picked second in the CW preseason coaches' poll and start the year ranked No. 7 in the U SPORTS poll.

Last year, MRU got the best of Calgary in five of the six regular season games, with the Dinos win coming 4-0 in the Scotiabank Saddledome. The two teams also met twice in preseason action, with the Dinos winning both games, 6-5 and 5-1.

The No. 4 Calgary Dinos women's soccer team has just one game this weekend - a showdown with crosstown rival Mount Royal. The top-two teams in the division will square off Friday night at 7 p.m. from McMahon Stadium.

Calgary heads into the weekend still unbeaten this year through 12 games and with two games just left on the regular-season schedule. The Dinos have finshed the conference slate without a loss just three times in recorded history, going 7-0-3 in 1993, 1996 and 2000. The program has also finished the regular season with just one loss three times in recent years in 2016 (9-1-4), 2018 (13-1) and 2019 (10-1-3).

The Dinos are looking to win the Canada West Prairie Divison for the second consecutive season - leading holding a four-point lead over MRU with two games to play. Mount Royal sits in second with 28 points - three ahead of MacEwan for the second spot going into the final two weekends.

In a bit of a scheduling oddity, the two Canada West schools separated by the least amount of distance have not played each other in the regular season since 2021. Due to conference restructuring and on Prairie team playing in the Pacific Division, the last time the two city rivals played in a meaningful game came back on Sept. 25, 2021 - a 1-1 draw. Calgary has just one loss to Mount Royal since the Cougars joined Canada West.

The University of Calgary Dinos women's hockey team has its home opener this weekend, hosting Mount Royal from Father David Bauer Saturday at 5 p.m. The two teams will first face off Friday at 7 p.m. from Flames Community Arenas.

Calgary started the season splitting a pair of games on the road in Regina. Jess Martens scored 10 minutes into the season and the Dinos' defence made it stand up as Amelia Awad tallied 27 saves in the 1-0 opening win. One day later, despite the Dinos out-shooting the Cougars, 31-20, this time it was the UofR claiming the win.

Mount Royal comes into the weekend also at 1-1 after splitting at home against Saskatchewan. MRU won the opener, 3-1, but were shutout in a 1-0 loss on Saturday. The Cougars were picked to finish third in this year's Canada West preseason coaches' poll.

The Dinos and Cougars have had some incredible chapters to the Crowchild Classic in recent years, including Calgary's 2-1 shootout win in the Scotiabank Saddledome this past January. MRU finished with a 4-2 edge in last year's head-to-head, and the two teams split in their preseason games last month.
Dinos Women's Rugby (0-6)
Friday, Oct. 10 | Calgary vs. Lethbridge | Hellard Field | 1:00 PM | Watch

Calgary's women's rugby team closes out the 15s season this Friday with a home game against Lethbridge at 1 p.m. The game will be played just a short drive from campus at Hellard Field.

The Dinos head into their final weekend with a hard-luck 0-5 record, falling in their last two contests by a combined eight points. One of those two games was showdown in Lethbridge back on Sept. 20. In that one, the Pronghorns jumped out to a 17-0 lead at halftime only to see the Dinos roar back only to fall three short at 22-19.

The 'Horns enter the weekend sitting at 2-2-1 with 13 points through five games - good for third place in Canada West. Any result in Friday's game will see them maintain their lead over Alberta in the standings heading into this year's Final Four - hosted by Alberta.
