The 2025-26 Canada West season gets underway for the University of Calgary Dinos men's basketball team this weekend, as they start their title defence with two games in Lethbridge. Friday's opener is set for an 8 p.m. tip time, while Saturday's rematch is set for 7 p.m. Both contests are scheduled to follow the women's games.
Calgary is coming off its latest Canada West Championship a season ago, knocking off UBC in the final, 109-96. The Dinos went on to finish as the national runners-up in yet another dominant season under head coach Dan Vanhooren. Now in his 26th season on campus, Vanhooren is coaching a largely new roster that has an automatic berth to this year's Final 8 as the U SPORTS Championship comes to the Jack Simpson Gym this coming March.
Four of the five primary starters from last year's championship squad are gone, as the Dinos return just 25 percent of their scoring from a season ago. Enter three highly touted transfers to go with seven heavily recruited rookies and Calgary still figures to once again battle for the top spot in the league this year.
The Dinos open the year at Lethbridge, a destination that has proven to be plenty challenging over the years. In fact, despite owning a 100-63 record against the Pronghorns, Calgary has not won both games of a weekend set against their provincial rivals to the south since 2009. The Dinos also have not played the 'Horns on the road since late in 2022, with the home team taking both of those contests.

The start of a new era officially kicks off Friday as first year Dinos women's basketball head coach Sarah Besselink leads her team into their first Canada West action with two games at Lethbridge. Friday's opener is set for a 6 p.m. start time, while Saturday's tip off is scheduled for 5 p.m.
Calgary is coming off a 16-4 season before bowing out in the Canada West quarterfinals a season ago. The Dinos do return a vast majority of last year's roster, including three of the five primary starters from last year's talented squad.
Besselink comes to Calgary after a successful playing and coaching career at Ottawa. After five impressive seasons on the court, the Kingston, Ont., native returned to coach her alma mater for five seasons, including four as the lead assistant.
The Dinos have had their way against the Pronghorns over the past decade-plus, winning 29 of the last 31 in the series. The last time Lethbridge won against Calgary actually came in back-to-back games back in 2022 in the unique COVID-adjusted season, winning both games by a combined four points. Calgary still holds a 120-40 edge head-to-head dating back to 1973.

Saturday, Oct. 18 | Canada West Championships | Victoria, B.C. | 1:00 PM MT
The 2025 Canada West Championships are here, as the Calgary Dinos travel to Victoria in pursuit of more hardware this weekend. The women's 8k race is set to start at 1 p.m. MT, with the men's 8k set to follow at 2 p.m. MT.
It's been a successful start to the season for Calgary. The team dominated their opening meet down in Lethbridge back in mid-September, claiming eight of the top-10 spots on the women's side to go with six of the top-10 spots in the men's race. The Dinos followed that up by once again winning the Stewart Cup at their home meet - the annual head-to-head battle with Alberta.
Calgary has a total of 14 Canada West Cross Country banners in its history, with the most recent coming on the men's side in 2019 to cap a three-year run of dominanace by the Scarlet & Gold.
Dinos Football (2-5)
Saturday, Oct. 25 | Calgary vs. Alberta | McMahon Stadium | 1:00 PM | Watch | Live Stats
The Dinos (2-5) return home for just the second time since Sept. 5 as they close the regular season against Alberta (1-6) from McMahon Stadium Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
Calgary is coming off yet another one-score loss in a 33-31 final from Winnipeg last weekend. That marks the fourth one-score loss for the Dinos this season, as they still hold out hope for a playoff berth going into Week 8, though they do need some help. The Dinos enter the final weekend tied with UBC for the fourth and final playoff spot, with the Thunderbirds holding the tiebreaker over the Dinos (a 23-22 win over Calgary in Vancouver back in Week 4). That means the Dinos will need UBC to lose when they travel to Regina Friday afternoon to give Calgary a chance to earn a playoff berth in Saturday's contest.
Offensively, the Dinos are coming off one of their most impressive performances of the year. Rookie quarterback David Jordan finished with a season-high 315 yards to go with two touchdowns in the two-point loss to Manitoba.
Saturday marks the second Battle of Alberta this season, with the Dinos winning in Edmonton back in Week 3, 23-19. In that one, rookie running back Eri Olarubofin ran wild for 156 yards on the ground on just 17 carries, including the game-winning touchdown with just 52 seconds remaining.
It has been an interesting rivalry series between the Dinos and Golden Bears, with the road team winning the last six games. The last win by a home team dates all the way back to Oct. 5, 2019 with the Dinos breezed to a 34-16 win at McMahon.
Dinos Men's Hockey (5-1)
Friday, Oct. 24 | Calgary at Alberta | Clare Drake Arena | 7:00 PM | Watch | Live Stats
Saturday, Oct. 18 | Calgary vs. Alberta | Father David Bauer Arena | 7:00 PM | Watch | Live Stats
The Dinos men's hockey team is off to an impressive 5-1 start, earning them the No. 7 ranking in the latest U SPORTS top-10 as they head into a home-and-home weekend against Alberta (4-2) - the lone meeting between the provincial rivals all year. Friday's opener is set for 7 p.m. in Edmonton, while Saturday's rematch comes to Father David Bauer - also with a 7 p.m. puck drop.
Calgary is off to an impressive 5-1 start to the season, racking up a remarkable 29 goals while allowing just 12 in the first six games. The 4.83 goals-per-game leads all 25 U SPORTS programs in the early going.
Perhaps more impressively, is the Dinos are racking up these impressive scoring figures despite any one player leading the one. An incredible 20 different players for the Scarlet & Gold already have at least one point through the first six games, with 14 different players already finding the back of the net at least one time. Adam Kydd leads all of Canada West with 11 points (four goals, seven assists) thus far.
While the Dinos and Bears did meet in the postseason last year, the majority of both current squads were not present for that rivalry showdown that saw Alberta advance, 2-1, in the incredibly tight three-game set. Last year, the two teams also met just one weekend, with the UofA claiming both games by a combined 12-4.
Dinos Women's Hockey (4-2)
Friday, Oct. 24 | Calgary vs. Alberta | Father David Bauer Arena | 6:00 PM | Watch | Live Stats
Saturday, Oct. 25 | Calgary at Alberta | Clare Drake Arena | 5:00 PM | Watch | Live Stats
Calgary's women's hockey team (4-2) is coming off its first weekend sweep as they sit atop the Canada West East Division standings through the first six games of the year. They now look to carry that momentum into a rivalry home-and-home weekend against Alberta. Friday's opener is set for 6 p.m. from Father David Bauer Arena, while Saturday's rematch has a 5 p.m. scheduled start up in Edmonton.
The floodgates broke for the Dinos offensive unit last weekend. After netting five combined goals through the first four games, Calgary scored an impressive eight goals in the two-game sweep of Manitoba at home last weekend. Evelyn Lawrence led the way with four points (two goals, two assists) in nearly two seasons.
While the front line finally found its grove, the Dinos defence continued to be a brick wall - allowing two goals in Saturday's finale following a shutout on Friday. Fourth-year goaltender Amelia Awad already has two shutouts on the year in four starts in net for the Scarlet & Gold, with both her 0.5 goals-against average and .983 save percentage ranking third in all of U SPORTS in the early going.
Alberta comes into the weekend sitting at 2-2-2. The Pandas opened the year with a shootout loss and an overtime loss at Trinity Western. After sweeping MacEwan in Edmonton the following weekend, Alberta once again lost two games out west last time out, this time 3-0 and 5-1 at UBC. Calgary went 1-3 against the Pandas last year, but did claim 6-2 and 5-2 wins in Edmonton this year in pre-season action.
Dinos Women's Soccer (11-1-2)
Friday, Oct. 24 | Calgary vs. Victoria | McMahon Stadium | 6:00 PM | Watch | Live Stats
The No. 7 Dinos women's soccer team (11-1-2) heads into the postseason this weekend, hosting Victoria (5-5-4) Saturday evening at 6 p.m. from McMahon Stadium. The winner will head to the Canada West Final Four, hosted this year by the highest remaining seeded team from the Pacific Division.
Calgary is coming off its first and only loss this season in a 1-0 result from a windy day at Mount Royal last Sunday. Despite playing a majority of starters only half the game, the Dinos hit the cross bar three times and the post on two other occasions in that one in an unlucky result to spoil their bid for an undefeated season. Sunday's result had no bearing on this year's standings for Calgary, however, as the Dinos had already locked up the division title for a second year in a row and a home playoff game.
Victoria now comes to campus for a rematch of last year's conference semifinal, ironically also set at McMahon Stadium. In that one, the Vikes scored in the 12th minute and held on tight for a 1-0 result to earn them a bid to nationals. Calgary and Victoria have met just three times in the regular season in the last decade, but - after Friday's contest - will have met five times in the postseason over that same span.
Dinos Men's Soccer (8-5-1)
Friday, Oct. 24 | Calgary vs. UFV | Thunderbird Stadium | 5:00 PM MT | Watch | Live Stats
*Sunday, Oct. 26 | Calgary vs. TBD | Thunderbird Stadium | 2:00 PM MT | Watch | Live Stats (if win Friday)
It's another playoff rematch for the Dinos men's soccer team (8-5-1) as they head to Vancouver for a Canada West quarterfinal match up against UFV (7-4-4), scheduled for 5 p.m. MT from Thunderbird Stadium on the UBC campus.
The winner of Friday's game will advance to Sunday's semifinal against the winner of UBC and Alberta. That semifinal game will kickoff at 2 p.m. MT.
Calgary is coming off an 8-5-1 regular season. The Dinos started the year 7-2-0 following an impressive 2-1 win over Victoria on Sept. 21. But, the team went just 1-3-1 down the stretch, scoring just three goals in that span while being shutout three times. Calgary is coming off a 2-0 win over Mount Royal last time out and has played just one game since Oct. 5, as they look to get healthy at the right time.
It's a bit of a unique situation, that the Dinos and Cascades once again meet in a conference quarterfinal contest from the UBC campus. Last year, UFV walked away with the win after a 5-3 results in PKs following 120 minutes of scoreless soccer. The two teams also met in a preseason game in pre-season game in Kelowna, with that game finishing 1-1.
