Dinos mine silver at CW Championships

LETHBRIDGE, Alta. – The University of Calgary Dinos racked up 14 more medals in the third and final day of competition and finished in second place on both the men's and women's side at the 2025 Canada West Championships Sunday afternoon inside the Max Bell Regional Aquatic Centre.

The Dinos finished the three-day meet with 892 points on the men's side and 801.5 points in the women's team score. UBC swept this year's conference banners.

Calgary started the final day with a bang, sweeping the podium in the women's 200 butterfly. Rookie Kaitlyn Luu brought home the gold in 2:17.61, with Hayley French (2:19.18) taking silver and rookie Jasmine Nicols (2:19.53) bringing home the bronze.

On the men's side Nicholas Duncan earned the bronze medal with a time of 2:01.64, with fellow second year Carter Scheffel taking fifth in 2:03.21.

Next up, Eliza Housman brought home another medal, this time taking silver in the women's 100 freestyle in 55.38. Myriam Hickey (56.32) came in sixth and Julianne Moore (57.67) eighth as the Dinos once again loaded up the A-final.

Rookie Sarah Haugen was the next Dino to top the podium, winning the 200 IM by half a second in a tight race with a winning time of 2:16.41. Nicols (2:23.66) came in sixth and Abby Gebhardt (2:31.71) eighth, while French won the B-final as the Dinos once again loaded up more points in the event.

It was an incredible showing of depth by the Dinos in the men's 200 IM, taking six of the top eight spots. Ian Cameron claimed the silver medal in 2:00.25, while N. Duncan brought home another bronze in 2:01.14. Ewan Shearer (2:02.71), Patrick McCloy (2:05.09), Matthew Syrgiannis (2:05.55) and Aiden Luykenaar (2:05.73) all also finished in the A-final in another impressive showing by the Scarlet & Gold.

Calgary claimed two more medals in the men's 100 backstroke. Thomas McDonald touched the wall second overall in 54.06, with Ethan Fast right behind at 54.75 to bring home the bronze. Shearer (56.85) and Gibson Black (56.96) finished seventh and eighth, respectively, to add more valuable points.

It was another gold-medal finish for Alexanne Lepage in the women's 200 breaststroke. The third year topped the field in the event for the third year in a row, touching the wall in 2:25.16 – nearly a full seven seconds ahead of the next swimmer. Haugen (2:32.42) just missed out on another medal by taking fourth, with Gebhardt (2:37.88) right behind in fifth and Brooklyn Pickford (2:41.36) adding more points with an eighth-place finish.

Rookie Aiden Gyorfi brought home the final individual medal of the weekend for Calgary. The Edmonton native earned the bronze in 3:55.03, with McCloy (4:01.18), Syrgiannis (4:03.70) and Xavier Pimentel (4:07.67) once again loaded up the A-final for the Dinos.

In the final events of this year's championships, the Dinos finished runner-up in both the men's and women's 400 medley relay. The women's team of Hannah Johnsen, Lepage, Luu and E. Housman touched the wall in 4:05.47, while the men's foursome of T. McDonald, Cameron, N. Duncan and Black earned the silver in 3:35.37. 

In all, the Dinos finished this year's conference championships by bringing home 35 total medals over the three days of swimming.

After the conclusion of the meet, Stephen Moore was named the recipient of the 2025 Canada West Community Service Award for his work outside of the pool.
