Hockey season is here as the Calgary Dinos men's hockey team opens the 2025-26 season at home, welcoming the Regina Cougars to Father David Bauer for a pair of games. Friday's opener is set for 7 p.m., while Saturday's rematch is set for a 6 p.m. puck drop.
The Dinos will have a new look this season, as there are 16 new faces on head coach Mark Howell's roster this season. While there is plenty to be excited about from the newcomers, a host of returning veterans are still expected to lead the Scarlet & Gold this season - including standout goaltenders Carl Tetachuk and Carl Stankowski.
Calgary is coming off a 16-10-2 season that saw them finish in the restructured Canada West divisions a season ago. The Dinos nearly pulled off the road upset in Edmonton but fell 2-1 in the quarterfinal series to the Bears.
This year's squad has impressed in preseason action, going 4-1-1 against three of the best teams in CW a season ago.
The Dinos open against Regina - a foe they typically have had plenty of success against. The two teams met just one time last year - a pair of 3-1 wins for Calgary in Regina back in November. Howell's teams have won the last 10 regular season games against the Cougars, with the last UofR win in the series dating back to a 4-0 shutout in Saskatchewan on Nov. 27, 2021.
Dinos Women's Soccer (9-0-1)
Saturday, Oct. 4 | Calgary vs. Saskatchewan | Calgary Soccer Center | 12:00 PM | Watch | Live Stats
Sunday, Oct. 5 | Calgary vs. Regina | McMahon Stadium | 12:00 PM | Watch | Live Stats
The nationally ranked Dinos women's soccer team looks to continue its strong finish to the regular season, hosting two more games this weekend. On Saturday, the Dinos host Saskatchewan )(6-4) off-campus at the Calgary Soccer Centre before a Sunday showdown with Regina (3-6-1) from McMahon Stadium. Both games are scheduled to start at noon.
Despite racking up two more wins to remain undefeated and move to 9-0-1, the Dinos dropped from No. 3 to No. 5 in the latest U SPORTS poll. The Dinos dispatched winless Manitoba 3-0 and 2-0 this past weekend, with the Bisons putting forward a strong defensive unit to limit Calgary's high-scoring attack.
With four games to play, the Dinos sit in the driver's seat of the Canada West Prairie Division. They own 28 points through 10 games - three ahead of Mount Royal for the top spot in the division. A minimum of four points (a win and a tie) this weekend would guarantee a top-two finish, with next weekend's double-header with MRU almost certainly going to determine this year's No. 1 seed.
Calgary has had success against both of its upcoming opponents in recent years. The Dinos are 2-0-2 against the Huskies under head coach Diogo Raposo, including a 2-0 win in Week 1 this season. They have also won their last nine regular-season games against Regina dating back to 2015, including a 6-0 rout in this year's season opener.
Dinos Men's Soccer (7-4)
Saturday, Oct. 4 | Calgary vs. Saskatchewan | Calgary Soccer Center | 2:15 PM | Watch | Live Stats
Sunday, Oct. 5 | Calgary vs. Lethbridge | McMahon Stadium | 2:15 PM | Watch | Live Stats
Playing their final two home games of the regular season, the Calgary Dinos men's soccer team will look to bounce back this weekend as they host Saskatchewan (2-6-1) and Lethbridge (3-3-3). Saturday's showdown with the Huskies will take place off-campus at the Calgary Soccer Centre, while Sunday's game against the Pronghorns will be back on campus at McMahon Stadium. Both games are scheduled to start at 2:15 p.m. following the conclusion of the women's games.
The Dinos had a hard-luck weekend in Edmonton last time out, falling 3-0 in a game that wasn't reflected well by the final score to Alberta before an 1-0 upset by MacEwan. Now, Calgary sits at 7-4 on the year and in second place in the Canada West Prairie Division standings. The Dinos only have three games remaining and will have next weekend off before returning to the field Saturday, Oct. 18 for a "road" game at Mount Royal.
Both games this weekend are rematches. Calgary won 3-2 in Lethbridge back in late August with Soliman Aria's 85th-minute goal - his second of the game - proving to be the difference. Two days later, Joey Plenzik's goal in the third minute stood up in a 1-0 win against the Huskies in Saskatchewan. The Dinos have won all seven of their games against the UofS over the past three-plus seasons, while the Pronghorns have proven to be much stiffer competition as that series is 4-3-2 in favour of Calgary since 2021.
Dinos Cross Country
Saturday, Oct. 4 | Stewart Cup | Canmore Park | 11:00 AM
After an outstanding start to the season, the Dinos cross country teams are back in action for their lone home meet of the year in the annual Stewart Cup this Saturday from nearby Canmore Park. The women's race is scheduled to start at 11 a.m., with the men's gun set to go off at noon.
Calgary dominated their opening meet of the year down in Lethbridge, with all eight women's runners finishing in the top-10 and six of the men's runners finishing ninth or better. Rookie Jenna Conrad won the women's race with teammate Sophie Jensen bringing home silver. Meanwhile, Max Cook led the men with an individual bronze medal.
The Dinos will now look to carry that momentum into this year's Stewart Cup - the annual head-to-head battle to Alberta. In addition to the UofA, Victoria, Manitoba, Regina and Saskatchewan are all scheduled to run at this year's home meet.
The annual Stewart Cup is a combination of men's and women's scores. The meet had its inaugural run in 2003 and is held every year in memory of Brian and Gerry Stewart, who tragically went missing while hiking in the mountains of Russia. The meet rotates between Edmonton and Calgary, as one of the Stewart brothers attended each school.

Saturday, Oct. 4 | Calgary at Regina | Co-operators Center | 5:00 PM | Watch | Live Stats
This weekend also marks the start of the 2025-26 season for the Dinos women's hockey squad, opening up on the road for two games in Regina. Friday's start is scheduled for 7 p.m., with Saturday's rematch set for 5 p.m. Both games are slated to take place inside the Co-Operators Center.
Calgary returns an overwhelming majority of last year's squad, graduating just two players from a season ago. Head coach Josh Gosling enters his second full season leading the Dinos and will welcome four newcomers to this year's roster - three first years and a graduate transfer. Of those rookies, two are highly touted goaltenders who figure to play key roles early, as Calgary played the majority of last season with just one goalie.
The head-to-head series with Regina has not only been tight over the past few seasons, it has been highly entertaining. The two teams have split the last 10 matchups, racking up a combined 55 goals in those contests with just two total shutouts - one each way - in that span. Last year, the Dinos and Cougars met played just two times early in the year. Regina won, 4-3, in overtime, before a 2-0 Calgary win one day later.
The Dinos are in town next weekend, starting Friday at Mount Royal before hosting MRU for their home opener on Saturday, Oct. 11 at Father David Bauer Arena.
Dinos Football (2-3)
Saturday, Oct. 4 | Calgary at Regina | Mosaic Stadium | 2:00 PM | Watch | Live Stats
The Dinos football team will join the women's hockey team in Regina this weekend for a rematch against a Rams team that comes into the weekend 4-1 overall and ranked sixth in the latest U SPORTS poll. Kickoff from Mosaic Stadium is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday.
Calgary lost to Saskatchewan last weekend to fall to 2-3 on the season. Despite that record, the Dinos still sit in a three-way tie for third in the Canada West standings.
The Dinos and Rams battled back in Week 1 to start the 2025 season. That game - played in McMahon Stadium - saw Calgary erase a 13-point deficit with just 4:30 remaining to send the game to overtime. But Regina scored on their possession in OT and were able to hold the Dinos out of the endzone in an instant classic. The Rams have now won six of the last seven against the Dinos, with Calgary's last win coming in Week 6 at Mosaic Stadium last season.
Canada West football is on bye next weekend, with the Dinos returning to action Oct. 18 for a road game against Manitoba.
Dinos Field Hockey (0-6)
Saturday, Oct. 4 | Calgary at UBC | Wright Field | 12:00 PM MT
Sunday, Oct. 5 | Calgary at UBC | Wright Field | 12:00 PM MT
The 2025 regular season comes to a close this weekend for the Dinos field hockey team as they head to Vancouver to take on UBC (2-1-1) for a pair of games from Wright Field. Both Saturday and Sunday's contests are scheduled to start at noon Mountain Time.
Calgary heads into the weekend having made noticeable strides through the first three weekends. Despite the record, the Dinos are clearly growing under second-year head coach Jenn Beagan, who has one of the youngest rosters in the country.
This weekend will mark the final competition for Calgary's lone senior - fifth-year forward Julia McDermott.
