CALGARY – It all comes down to the final game of the regular season game of the year as the University of Calgary Dinos (2-5) host Alberta (1-6) as both teams try to chase down the fourth and final playoff spot in Canada West.
Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. from McMahon Stadium, with streaming once again available on Canada West TV.
HEADLINES
- Both the Dinos and Golden Bears will be rooting for Regina to knock off UBC on Friday, which would set up a win-and-you're-in showcase Saturday at McMahon Stadium.
- Alberta and Calgary are both looking to get back into the playoffs after missing last season. The Bears last made it in 2023, while the Dinos haven't advanced since their Vanier Cup win in 2019.
- Calgary won a 23-19 game in Edmonton back in Week 3. The Dinos rushed for 215 yards on just 24 carries for an average of 9.0 yards-per-carry, capped by an 18-yard scoring run from rookie Eri Olarubofin with just 52 seconds left for the road win.
- Calgary is looking to end a four-game skid, with three of those four losses coming by a combined nine points.
- The road team has won eight of the last ten game in the Battle of Alberta.
Calgary Dinos (2-5)
Next week: TBD
- Calgary is coming off a heartbreaking 33-31 loss to Manitoba last weekend. The Dinos had a chance to tie the game on the final snap, but a 34-yard field goal attempt went just wide before going through the back of the end zone for a rouge instead of a field goal.
- It was a career-best performance for rookie quarterback David Jordan last time out. Despite battling swirling winds inside Princess Auto Stadium, Jordan finished an impressive 22-30 for a career-high 315 yards and two touchdowns. He also avoided being sacked for the first time in his young career.
- Calgary also had a big day from a pair of receivers as rookie Zion Grant hauled in five passes for 139 yards, while veteran Matt Sibley racked up 102 yards on seven catches. That is significant, as it marks the first time the Dinos have had two receivers go for 100-plus yards since Jalen and Tyson Philpot did so in their final games as a Dino back on Nov. 6, 2021.
- The Dinos need UBC to lose on Friday, as they dropped the Week 4 game in Vancouver, 23-22, giving the Thunderbirds the tiebreaker in a head-to-head scenario.
- If the Dinos return to the postseason, it will be as the No. 4 seed in this year's playoffs, sending them to whoever finishes atop the standings. Saskatchewan and Regina are currently tied for the top spot with 6-1 records. The Huskies won the lone head-to-head between the two schools this year back in Week 4, 22-20. Regina closes the regular season at home against UBC on Friday, while the Huskies wrap things up Saturday also at home against Manitoba.
Alberta Golden Bears (1-6)
Next week: TBD
- The Bears sit at 1-6 heading into the final week under first-year head coach Stevenson Bone.
- Alberta is coming off a narrow 22-20 home loss to Regina last week, seeing Rams kicker Ty Gorniak connect from 44 yards out with 25 seconds left to give U of R the win.
- The lone win for Alberta this season came in Week 5, with a dominant 38-18 showing over UBC.
- That win is what keeps the Golden Bears playoff hopes alive heading into the final week. A win on Saturday over Calgary, coupled with a UBC loss on Friday, would put the Dinos, Thunderbirds and Bears in a three-way tie for fourth at 2-6. Alberta would win that tiebreaker, as they would be 2-1 between the three teams, while the both Calgary and UBC would be 1-2.
