CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos (2-3) are back on the road, heading to Regina (4-1) for a Week 1 rematch with the No. 6 Rams. Saturday's kickoff from Mosaic Stadium is scheduled for 2 p.m, with the game once again streamed live on Canada West TV.
HEADLINES
- The first of three rematches to close out the regular season comes Saturday as both the Dinos and Rams have played each team in the league once so far this year.
- Calgary nearly pulled off the improbable comeback back in Week 1, erasing a nine-point deficit with less than a minute to play before Regina walked away with a 43-36 OT win.
- After winning 20 of 22 against Regina from 2008-2019, the Rams have had Calgary's number with wins in six of the last seven in the series. Five of those seven have finished as one-score games as the two teams have had many memorable battles of late.
- Following Saturday's contests, Canada West football will have a bye week for the Thanksgiving holiday before returning to the field Oct. 17-18.
Calgary Dinos (2-3)
Next week: BYE
- The Dinos are coming off just their second loss by more than one score in the Ryan Sheahan era.
- Injuries have played a massive role for the Dinos this season, specifically on the offensive side of the ball. Two of the starting linemen from Week 1 have missed significant time, while leading receiver Matt Sibley has missed two games with a knock. The biggest hit has come to the running back room, where fourth-year back Matthieu Clarke was injured in Week 2 and hasn't returned. Rookie Eri Olarubofin shined brightly while filling in for Clarke, only to be knocked out of the Week 4 contest in Vancouver and miss last week's game. Lead fullback Evan Smith also has missed the last six quarters of action.
- One notable bright spot for the Dinos this season has been the play of its defensive line. Six different players have registered at least 0.5 sacks so far this season, with rookie Crown Otoro leading the way with 3.5 through five games - second most in Canada West. The 11 sacks as a team has them tied for the most in the conference and has already surpassed the entire final season total from each of the past four years.
- After battling injuries that have kept him off the field nearly the entirety of his first three years on campus, Trey Loupelle is making the most of finally being healthy and getting his shot. The St. Francis HS grad has done well at receiver, but has made his impact felt in the return game. In the past two weeks alone, Loupelle has returns of 48 and 56 yards and has over 400 return yards already this season.
- Following the bye week, the Dinos are once again back on the road - their fourth road game in five weeks - as they are off to Winnipeg for a Week 2 rematch with Manitoba on Saturday, Oct. 18.
Regina Rams (4-1)
Next week: BYE
- Third-year running back Marshall Erichsen has been one of the best backs in the entire country so far this season. Erichsen has already carried the ball over 100 times through the first five games and is averaging 145 yards per game and has eight rushing touchdowns on the year. Both of those numbers rank him second in all of U SPORTS, behind only Western's Ethan Dolby.
- Erichsen is one rushing touchdown away from tying the school record of nine. With 725 rushing yards, he is also on pace to threaten Adrian Charles' school record of 972 rushing yards and could become the U of R's first 1,000-yard rusher.
- A win Saturday would lock up a postseason berth for Regina with two weeks to play.
- After the bye, Regina heads to Edmonton to take on Alberta Saturday in what will be their final road game of the regular season.
