Massier earns hat trick in shootout victory over Spartans

LANGLEY, B.C. – Carter Massier netted a hat trick, while Adam Kydd picked up the shootout winner as the University of Calgary Dinos men's hockey team edged the Trinity Western Spartans 5-4 on Friday evening at the Langley Events Centre.

The Dinos improve to 11-8-0-2 with the result, while the Spartans drop to 3-17-2-1. The point in the shootout defeat was Trinity Western's first point in program history versus Calgary.

In the first period, it was Trinity Western who struck first with a power play goal by Artem Hrabovetskyi at 10:49, followed by another goal from Matteo Lamoureux at 13:13. Calgary responded with two goals of their own, one by Massier at 15:57 and another by Colson Gengenbach at 17:36, evening the score at 2-2 by the end of the period. Friday's game was the first for head coach Mark Howell and Gengenbach since returning from the 2025 FISU Winter World University Games in Torino, Italy.

The second period began with Hrabovetskyi scoring his second of the night at 2:10 to give TWU a 3-2 lead. Massier would light the lamp to tie the game and eventually go ahead, completing the hat trick and putting Calgary ahead 4-3.

In the third period, Trinity Western faced an early challenge with a penalty on Christian Lowe for hooking at 7:31, allowing Calgary a power play opportunity. However, Calgary was unable to capitalize on the advantage. The period's defining moment came at 18:46 when, with TWU's net empty, Connor Farren scored the game-tying goal for the Spartans, assisted by Zack Whittaker and Christian Lowe to send the game into overtime.

In the overtime period, both teams had quality chances, but neither got the game-winner, with Calgary outshooting TWU 4-2.

Kydd scored the lone goal of the shootout to give the Dinos the shootout win.

Calgary and Trinity Western will face off again on Saturday with a 2 p.m. MT puck drop at the Langley Events Centre.
