CALGARY – The University of Calgary women's basketball team came out firing against the University of Manitoba Bisons on Friday night, securing a 93-50 victory in front of a crowd of 940 fans for the annual Pack the Jack night from the Jack Simpson Gym. The Dinos showcased their defensive strength and offensive efficiency from start to finish.
The game opened with both teams finding their footing, tied at 3-3 before Calgary quickly pulled away. By the end of the first quarter, the Dinos had built a 33-12 lead. Captain
Mya Proctor was solid on the perimeter, while
Myriam Kone led the charge with eight early points. Proctor also grabbed two key rebounds, and the Dinos' defence set the tone early, shutting down their opponents.
Calgary remained in complete control throughout the second quarter.
Kourtney Oss continued to impress with 12 rebounds, solidifying her place as a rising star in Canada West. The Dinos forced seven steals and held the Bisons to a low shooting percentage while maintaining an efficient 48.6% field goal rate. By halftime, the Dinos had extended their lead to 50-22, proving that backcourt dominance was key to their game plan.
Keeping their intensity high, the Dinos continued to roll with another 25 points in the third. Oss capped off the quarter with a layup at the buzzer, extending Calgary's advantage to 75-37.
In the fourth quarter, Calgary's defence continued to shine. Despite a 14-4 run by the Bisons, the Dinos maintained control.
Elana Sireni came off the bench and added seven points in the final frame.
Pollyana Storie led all scorers with 17 points, while
Myriam Kone and Amélie Collin followed closely behind with 16 points each.
Paige Schatkowsky finished with 17 points for Manitoba, Emily Mandamin added 10, and Emerson Martin contributed nine.
The Dinos closed out their first home game in dominant fashion, winning 93-50. Following the game, interim head coach
Jhony Verrone emphasized the importance of consistency and focus throughout the season.
"We can't get complacent; we have to stay consistent. This squad is very open to growth. No matter what I say, they just want to get better, and with those kinds of players, I know we can do great things," said Verrone.
The Dinos will return to action against the Bisons on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. at Jack Simpson Gym.
