Dinos cruise to weekend sweep

CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos women's basketball team delivered a stellar performance on Saturday afternoon, securing an 83-43 win against the University of Manitoba Bisons inside the Jack Simpson Gym.

With the win, Calgary improves to 9-3 in conference play, while Manitoba moves to 5-7.

From the outset, the Dinos showcased their defence, with Amélie Collin leading the charge as a top-tier defender. Calgary capitalized on turnovers, turning defence into offensive opportunities. Mya Proctor executed a crucial steal, setting up Myriam Kone for a three-pointer that pushed the Dinos into a double-digit lead early.

The second quarter saw the Dinos continue to dominate the court, outscoring the Bisons 20-8. With an impressive 25-0 scoring run that spanned both opening quarters, Calgary extended their lead, controlling the game's pace. The Dinos also demonstrated strength on the boards, collecting five offensive and five defensive rebounds.

After the half, Manitoba ramped up its defensive efforts, but Calgary remained efficient on offence. The Dinos ended the third quarter with a 50-29 lead.

The Dinos sealed the win in the final quarter with efficient scoring, adding eight points in the paint. Sammy Shields came out firing with a career-high 10 points. Calgary's defence once again was the story, holding Manitoba to convert just 32.1 percent (17-53) overall for the game, including just a 4-20 showing from behind the arc.

Kone led the charge with 17 points, while Collin (11) and Sheilds also scored in double figures in this one. Kourtney Oss also had a nice night, stuffing the stat sheet with six points, a game-high nine rebounds, four assists, two blocks and two steals.

Paige Scatkowsky poured in a game-high 18 points for Manitoba, while Anna Miko led the team with six rebounds.

"The second game is always going to be more of a fight," said Kone. "We had good communication tonight. We know we need to stay calm and composed and look for the right option on every play."

With momentum on their side, the Dinos now set their sights on next weekend's Crowchild Classic, where they will face their crosstown rival Mount Royal for a pair of games on the MRU campus. Meanwhile, Manitoba heads home to host Alberta for a pair.
