Big game on tap at McMahon Saturday

CALGARY – After spending the past two weeks on the road, the Dinos football team is back home for a Week 4 showdown with league-leading Manitoba on Saturday. Kickoff from McMahon Stadium is scheduled for 2 p.m.

HEADLINES
  • Calgary nearly secured its second road win in a row before suffering a heartbreaking 44-40 double-overtime loss at Saskatchewan last Friday night. It marked just the third OT game in the last 20 years for the Dinos and the eighth recorded game that went past four quarters in program history - falling to 5-3 in such games.
  • Manitoba won its homecoming game in a thriller last weekend, taking down Alberta, 24-23. The Golden Bears found the endzone with just 52 seconds left in regulation to cut the gap to just one but elected to go for the two-point conversion and the lead but came up short.
  • The Dinos and Bisons faced off two times a season ago. Manitoba won a 34-21 contest on IG Field back in Week 5 before Calgary claimed a 35-23 bittersweet victory in Week 8. That regular-season finale proved to be a memorable one, as - despite the convincing win by the Dinos - it was the Bisons that advanced to the postseason, scoring on the final play of the game to finish with the tie-breaking edge in head-to-head point differential.
  • This series has significantly favored the home team for quite a while. Including the postseason, the home team has won the last 10 overall. The last road win in the series came back on Sept. 16, 2017 when the Dinos posted a 76-17 shellacking. The Bisons won the Hardy Cup at McMahon Stadium back in 2014, with their last regular-season win in Calgary dating all the way back to Oct. 21, 2005.
  • Saturday's showdown at McMahon is the lone Saturday game in Canada West this weekend, with Regina heading to Alberta and UBC hosting Saskatchewan - both on Friday night.

Calgary Dinos (1-2)
Next week: vs. UBC
  • Calgary had its best offensive performance of the young season at Saskatchewan in Week 3. Dom Britton threw for a career-high 317 yards, with brother Ben Britton hauling in eight catches for 181 of those yards - also a career best. Running back Matthieu Clarke also rushed for a season-high 124 yards last time out.
  • For the second straight week, the Dinos also benefited from a touchdown by the defensive/special teams side of the ball. Rookie linebacker Connor Jones blocked a punt and returned it for the score one week after three pick-sixes by the Dinos defence.
  • Connor Jones was named the Canada West Special Teams Player of the Week for his standout performance at Saskatchewan. That marks the third Dino to be recognized by the conference office through the first three weeks of the season, joining Nate Beauchemin and Vince Triumbari.
  • UBC comes to McMahon Stadium next week to start the second half of the season.

Manitoba Bisons (3-0)
Next week: vs. Regina
  • Manitoba is off to its second 3-0 start in the last four years after convincing wins over Saskatchewan and UBC to start the season before the one-point win over Alberta last time out.
  • The Bisons were picked third in the preseason coaches' poll, behind Alberta and UBC.
  • Bisons head coach Brian Dobie has announced this season will be his last leading his alma mater. Dobie took the reins at Manitoba back in 1996.
  • It's back to Winnipeg next week for the Bisons, as they get set to start the second half of the Canada West schedule by hosting Regina on Saturday.
