VANCOUVER – The Sports Illustrated Clubhouse Colleges Cup concluded on Sunday evening after two days of top-tier swimming action with teams from across Western Canada. UBC's women's team claimed first place with 1247.5 points, followed by the University of Calgary Dinos in second with 869.5 points and Team BC in third with 695.5 points. UBC's men's team also triumphed, scoring 1327 points, while the Dinos finished second with 893 and the University of Alberta Golden Bears secured third with 458.
Alexanne Lepage, the reigning U SPORTS Rookie of the Year, dominated all three breaststroke events and set a meet record in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:09.94.
Hannah Johnsen added points, taking third in both the 50 and 100 backstroke and contributing to podium results in the 400 and 200 freestyle relays.
Hayley French topped the field in the women's 200 butterfly, just touching out the next closest swimmer in 2:17.25 to top the podium.
Hannah Bennett had another strong weekend in the pool for the Dinos, taking third in the 100 IM in 1:03.52, as did
Eliza Housman in the 50 freestyle (26.03) and
Danika Ethier in the 200 breaststroke (2:30.37).
Stephen Calkins stood out for the Dinos men's squad, topping the podium in the 100 freestyle (49.23), the 200 freestyle (1:47.55), and securing second in the 50 freestyle (22.84), contributing 82 points for the University of Calgary.
Ian Cameron finished runner-up in the 50 breaststroke in 28.13.
Matthew Syrgiannis brought home a pair of bronze medals in the 200 backstroke (2:02.20) and 400 IM (4:24.53), while
Nicholas Duncan (200 butterfly/2:01.95) and
Charlie Skalenda (200 IM/2:03.85) also each posted a third-place finish on the weekend.
Calgary now turns its attention to the Canada West Championships, hosted this year by UBC. The three-day championship meet is set for Nov. 22-24 again inside the UBC Aquatic Centre.
