Dinos drop opener in Langley

LANGLEY, B.C. – In a battle for third spot in the West Division, the Dinos women's hockey team dropped a hard-luck 3-1 decision Friday afternoon from the Langley Events Centre. The win improves the Spartans to 8-7, while the loss drops the Dinos to 6-7-1-1.

The Spartans had a strong start and got on the board just 1:08 into this one. Kara Yackel finished off a great pass from Kyra Anderson to make it 1-0 right out of the gates.

Calgary nearly drew level late in the frame as Sophia Zuck took a lead pass and made a nice deke looked like she scored with the backhanded shot, but Kate Fawcett made an impressive stop to send the home team into the first intermission with the lead.

TWU again had the advantage in the second period, but needed Fawcett to make a couple of key saves to keep the Dinos off the scoresheet. With time closing in the second, Kailey Ledoux flung the puck toward the net from a difficult angle and saw it take a fortunate carom to sneak one past the Dinos' goaltender and make it 2-0 after two.

The Spartans had a 10-7 edge in shots on goal in the second period.

The Dinos had two power play opportunities in the final 20 minutes, allowing them to outshoot the Spartans 8-4 in the period. April Klarenbach scored at 15:52 to make it a one-goal game, redirecting a shot from Emma Tait.

In the final four minutes, the Dinos had a two-player advantage when they had a power play at 16:33 and pulled their goalie. But TWU kept the Calgary attack at bay. In the closing seconds,  Chloe Reid got the insurance goal for the Spartans to make the final 3-1 for Trinity Western.

The Spartans and Dinos will finish the two-game weekend series tomorrow at 2 pm MT at the Langley Events Centre. The game can be seen live on Canada West TV.
