Dinos strike early but fall to Spartans

LANGLEY, B.C. – The University of Calgary Dinos women's hockey team struck first on Saturday afternoon but could not hang on, falling 3-1 to the Trinity Western Spartans at the Langley Events Centre.

Krya McDonald scored two goals for the Spartans, who have now won eight of their last 10 games.

Trinity Western is 9-7-0-0 on the season, while Calgary drops to 6-8-1-1.

The Dinos opened the scoring at 2:07 of the first period. Calgary took advantage of a Trinity Western giveaway and Brooklin Fry found the top corner of the net to beat Kate Fawcett through a maze of players.

Cailin Yackel looked like she had tied the game mid-way through the second period when she beat Amelia Awad, but her shot went off the inside of the crossbar and stayed out of the Calgary net.

Kyra McDonald tied the game in the late stages of the middle frame. She picked up a Dinos' pass at the Calgary blue line, went up the left side, and beat Awad with a perfect shot into the top left corner of the net.

Anderson gave the Spartans the lead 1:02 into the third period when she stole the puck off a Dinos forward on the left board, skated to the centre of the Calgary zone, and beat Awad to the low right side.

McDonald got her second of the game at 7:45 of the third period. She took the puck off a Dinos forward at the TWU blue line, went up the left side, and in alone to find the top left corner of the Calgary net and give the Spartans a two-goal lead.

Josie McLeod looked to cut the deficit to one a few seconds later when she broke in alone, but Fawcett was up to the task and made the glove save to maintain the home team's lead.

The Dinos pulled Awad for the final two minutes but were unable to get another puck past Fawcett.

Awad finished with 36 saves, while Fawcett turned aside 25 attempts.

The Dinos resume play in the new year when they face the Mount Royal Cougars in a home-and-home set, Jan. 3-4.

Trinity Western has one more week of competition before the holiday season. They will play the UBC Thunderbirds starting on Friday, Dec. 6.
