Dinos ride power play to 7-0 rout of Spartans

CALGARY – Four straight power play goals helped the Calgary Dinos men's hockey team to a convincing 7-0 win over Trinity Western Friday night from Father David Bauer Arena.

With the shutout, the Dinos have now won three in a row with one game to go before the winter break. Calgary now sits at 9-5-1, while Trinity Western falls to 2-12-1.

"I thought our goaltender played really well," Dinos head coach Mark Howell said postgame. "In the first period, we gave up a few chances and I think we'd maybe like those opportunities back, but Marty (Connor Martin) bailed us out and did a really good job back there.

"We settled into our power play and it was really good tonight. And our penalty kill was 100 percent, so overall I think we're really happy as a team after this one."

The Dinos didn't wait long to get the party started Friday, with Jake Gricius netting his sixth of the year less than eight minutes in for the first goal of the game. A mere 55 seconds later, Calgary capitalized on a steal by Jadon Joseph, who found a wide-open Colson Gengenbach for his eighth of the year to quickly make it 2-0.

Gricius scored the first Dinos' power play goal of the night later in the first for his seventh of the season to make it 3-0 heading into the first intermission.

Zach Wytinck and Dylan Sador each finished off a power play chance for Calgary in the second to make it 5-0 after two.

Once again with the man advantage, Noah King got in on the action in the third before rookie Logan Hauer added another, with assists coming from fellow rookies Logen Hammett and Tyson Galloway.

The win is the second of the season for Martin, who finished the night making 25 saves for his first U SPORTS shutout. Leon Sommer played the majority of the minutes in goal in this one for TWU, racking up 36 saves in just over 51 minutes of action.

Calgary and Trinity Western play again Saturday at 6 p.m. again from FDB, with this game marking the last action of the semester for the Dinos.
