Persistence pays off as Dinos finish off sweep of Spartans

CALGARY – A pair of goals from Mack Stewart and Colson Gengenbach flipped the script as the Calgary Dinos men's hockey team turned a late 2-1 deficit into a dramatic 3-2 win over Trinity Western Saturday night from Father David Bauer Arena.

The response from the Spartans following Friday's 7-0 Dinos win was impressive, flying out of the gates and dominating the first period and carrying a 2-0 lead into the first intermission, nearly holding off Calgary for what would have been TWU's first win in the series history.

"I thought Trinity had a good response," Dinos head coach Mark Howell said postgame. "Like I said to the guys, it always reminds you of how hard it is to win in this league. It doesn't matter who you play, and you know their a proud team – they've got proud players who came out and played hard. You know they obviously weren't happy with how things went last night, and I thought their effort and response was really high in the first.

"I think we maybe took things for granted a little bit, got on our heels, but you know over all, we stayed with it. They blocked tons of shots. Their goalie was good, but we just stayed with it long enough and found two goals in the third."

Jeremy Klessens got the Spartans' first goal of the 7:04 into the game. The fourth-year forward picked up the puck near centre ice and carried it with attackers on both sides into the Dinos' zone. Klessens elected to shoot and was rewarded, finding the back of the net for the second time this year for the 1-0 lead.

TWU added another with just 1.1 seconds left on the clock in the first after Luke Spadafora's eighth of the year made it 2-0 after one.

Trinity Western outshot Calgary 13-6 in the first.

Despite dominating the second and outshooting TWU 16-2 in the second, the Dinos were unable to breakthrough until just over five minutes remained in the period. Logan Hauer held the puck in the zone and found a wide-open Zach Wytinck who found an open space in the Spartans' defence and sniped a shot top corner to cut the deficit to 2-1 with 5:27 to play in the second.

Calgary's relentless pressure finally paid off in the form of two goals just 45 seconds apart to flip the score on its head. Stawart lit the lamp for the first time this season at the 12:42 mark to tie things up before Gengenbach gave the Dinos the lead with his ninth of the year for the first lead of the game with 6:33 to play.

TWU did their best to level things back up. Finishing the game on a 6-4 advantage following a power play and an empty net, Daine DuBois rifled a one timer but Connor Martin made a tremendous diving stop with 11 seconds left to all but sew this one up.
The Dinos finished the night with a 37-19 edge in shots on net, including a 32-6 margin over the final two periods.

Martin finished the night making 17 saves for back-to-back wins in net for the Dinos, while Leon Sommer racked up 35 saves in the loss for TWU.

The Dinos are now off until the turn of the calendar, with their next conference game coming Jan. 3 rival Mount Royal comes to campus.
