CALGARY – Five total members of the University of Calgary Dinos men's soccer team were selected to the various Canada West All-Star squads, the conference office announced Wednesday in advance of the upcoming conference playoffs.
Owen Antoniuk,
Gianmarco Plenzik and
Joey Plenzik were all named CW First Team All-Stars, while
Efe Udolu-Joshua and
Kimia Kassanda were named to the conference's all-rookie team. The three first teamers marks the most of any team, while the five selections overall is the second most of any school.
Antoniuk finished his first full season as a Dino in breakout fashion, tying for the conference lead with eight goals despite playing in only 11 games. The third-year midfielder also dished out five assists for the high-powered Calgary attack this season and his 13 total points rank second in the conference this year.
For
Gianmarco Plenzik, the fourth-year midfielder erupted under first-year head coach
Ramon Mifflin's new system. Plenzik finished the regular season with seven goals after tallying five in his first three years in the Scarlet & Gold combined. The Schulich School of Engineering major also added five assists on the year and started all 14 games on the year, playing 1115 minutes – the most on the team for a field position player.
Third-year defender
Joey Plenzik also was named to the conference's first team all-star team after another outstanding season on the Dinos' backline. The local product scored the first goal of the season for Calgary and finished the year with two goals – a career best. He also played a big role in the Scarlet & Gold dropping just two games all season and allowing just 11 goals – tied for third best in Canada West.
Udolu-Joshua made 11 starts on the year and played in all but one contest, finishing his first season with two goals and one assist. Fellow newcomer Kassanda also started 11 games on the year and appeared in all 14 in his first collegiate season, tallying one assist and one goal – the game winner at UBCO.
After a 7-2-5 record in the regular season, the Dinos earned the No. 2 seed in the Canada West Prairie Division and are off to Vancouver for a quarterfinal contest against UFV. Kickoff is set for Friday at 5 p.m. MT
