CALGARY – After a record-setting regular season that ended in a Prairie Division title, five members of the University of Calgary Dinos men's soccer team were named to the Canada West All-Star and All-Rookie squads Monday, as announced by the conference office.
Joey Plenzik was named a Canada West First Team All-Star, while
Efe Udolu-Joshua and
Jacob Hunter earned Second Team honours.
Luis Rangel-Kataev and
Josiah Walter were named to the Canada West All-Rookie Team.
Calgary's five selections trailed only the six for the UBC Thunderbirds, and its two rookies were the most in the conference, tied with the University of Alberta Golden Bears. It's also a homegrown group, with all five honourees hailing from Calgary.
Plenzik earns Canada West First Team honours for the second time, having also been a first-team selection in 2024, in what is his final year of eligibility. The fifth-year defender and three-time Academic All-Canadian started all 11 of his appearances this season and tied for the team lead with three assists.
Udolu-Joshua adds a Second Team nod to the Canada West All-Rookie honour he earned in 2024. The third-year forward started all 13 matches and finished with six goals and two assists for eight points. He led the team with 40 shots, more than double any teammate.
Hunter joins him on the Second Team after a strong season on the back line, earning his first all-star nod in his fifth and final year. The defender played every minute of Calgary's 14 regular-season matches, scoring three goals and matching Plenzik and
Josral Frederick with three assists for six points.
For the rookies, Rangel-Kataev led the Dinos with seven goals in 13 matches while starting only eight of them. Four of those goals were game winners, accounting for nearly half of the team's nine. He was also named Canada West Athlete of the Week on Sept. 22. Walter, a midfielder, chipped in two goals and an assist in 11 matches, including a game-winner.
The Dinos finished the regular season 9-3-2, with their nine wins a program record, and went 6-1 at home to win the Prairie Division.
