CALGARY – Sixteen shooters were needed to break a goaltending showdown in a shootout, as the Saskatchewan Huskies came away with a 3-2 win over the University of Calgary Dinos men's hockey team at Father David Bauer Arena.

Back and forth through regulation, the Dinos had every opportunity they could ask for in overtime to secure their third consecutive win to open the 2024-25 season. Saskatchewan's penalty kill survived the extra session, and Roddy Ross and Ethan Regnier were the heroes of the shootout.

The Dinos slip to 2-0-1, while the Huskies remain perfect at 3-0-0.

"Both teams had power play chances," noted Dinos head coach Mark Howell. "We started reaching a little bit, which led to some penalties, but I thought during the first two periods we were quite good."

Ross' impressive night in the crease began with a busy first period. The Saskatchewan goaltender made 17 saves to keep the game scoreless through 20 minutes.

The action really started to pick up during the second period when Raphael Pelletier broke the ice to score the first goal of the game just over six minutes in. Calgary responded quickly, with defenders Dylan Anderson and Zach Wytinck scoring a minute and a half apart to give the Dinos the 2-1 lead. 

Saskatchewan forward Vince Loschiavo tied the game at the 7:10 minute mark of the third period to initiate the Huskies' comeback. 

Goaltending stood out through 65 minutes of action – and it only got better in the shootout. Ross made 40 saves through regulation and overtime, while Calgary's Carl Tetachuk turned away 29 chances.

Regnier's attempt in the eighth round of the shootout beat Tetachuk between the legs and ended the game.

"You get to a shootout, it's too bad, but it was a good game by both teams. Their goalie was outstanding," Howell added.

The Dinos and Huskies face off again on Saturday with a 6 p.m. puck drop at Father David Bauer Arena.
