CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos men's hockey team were undone by three unanswered goals by the Saskatchewan Huskies in a 4-1 decision at Father David Bauer Arena on Saturday night.
The Dinos drop their second consecutive game and now have a 2-1-1 record, while the Huskies continue their impressive season-opening run and sport a 4-0-0 record.
"We needed to manage pucks better. We had a few too many turnovers, and that cost us near the end of the game," said Dinos forward
Colson Gengenbach, whose side played the weekend with shortened lineups due to injury. "Even with 10 forwards and five defencemen, we dominated them for some parts of that game."
Saskatchewan got the game's first goal mid-way through the opening period when Ben Tkachuck converted on a pass rimmed around the boards by Cole Jordan.
Gengenbach held off several Huskies and tied the game with his fourth goal of the season later in the first period.
After a scoreless middle frame, the Dinos could not hold off the Huskies special teams.
First it was a shorthanded goal by Dawson Holt that broke the tie seven minutes into the third period. Just over two minutes later, a power play goal by Josh Pillar doubled the road team's lead.
Chantz Petruic delivered the dagger with five minutes remaining in the game, making it 4-1.
Saskatchewan got another strong performance from their goaltender on Saturday. This time, Jordan Kooy quietened the Dinos and finished with 24 saves.
The Dinos return to action next weekend with a home-and-home set versus the crosstown rival Mount Royal Cougars, beginning on Friday, Oct. 18 at Flames Community Arenas. The Huskies will travel to Edmonton to face the Alberta Golden Bears for two games.
