Saturday showdown scheduled in Regina

CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos (0-2) continue their two-week road stint Saturday with a trip to Regina to take on the Rams (0-2) at 2 p.m. at Mosaic Stadium.

Both teams will be looking for their first win of the season. The Dinos enter following losses to Alberta (33-9) and UBC (45-15), while the Rams have fallen to UBC (25-10) and Saskatchewan (40-6) to start the year.

HEADLINES
  • Saturday's game marks the lone meeting between Calgary and Regina this season.
  • Regina won both games over the Dinos in 2022. The Dinos comeback effort ran out of time in a 32-24 loss in Regina early in the year before a 30-7 handling by the Rams in the final game from McMahon Stadium last year.
  • Despite dropping the last three to the Rams, the Dinos are still 6-4 in their last 10 head-to-head matchups against Regina. In fact, Calgary holds a 27-12 edge in the all-time series, including a 22-5 record dating back to the start of the 2008 season.
  • The current three-game skid against Regina ties the longest losing streak for the Dinos in the series, equaling the three wins by the Rams from 2002-03.

Calgary Dinos (0-2)
Next week: vs. Saskatchewan
  • The Dinos will look for more consistency on Saturday. There have been plenty of bright spots through the first two games this season, but they haven't been able to string a complete game together yet.
  • Calgary's defence came up with a number of big plays early in last Saturday's loss at UBC. Early in the game, Nate Beauchemin spearheaded a big tackle at the goal line to keep the T-Birds out of the endzone and force a turnover on downs. Julian Alexis-Leon also blocked a field goal attempt and Jordan Chizda hauled in his first INT of the year and third of his young career.
  • The offence also got things going more in Week 2, with Gob Deng leading the way. The second-year wideout had seven catches for 160 yards and two scores - the first time going over the century mark and the first time finding the end zone in his young career.
  • The Dinos return back to campus next weekend, taking on reigning Canada West champion Saskatchewan on Friday, Sept. 22 at 6 p.m. from McMahon Stadium.

Regina Rams (0-2)
Next week: at Manitoba
  • After putting together their best season since 2016 last year and finishing with a 5-3 conference record, the Rams are off to an 0-2 start to the 2023 season.
  • Regina's defence had a bend-don't-break performance in the opener, allowing 431 yards to UBC but limiting them to just one touchdown and six field goals in a tight loss.
  • Second-year signal caller Noah Pelletier has yet to find the endzone through the air so far this season. One year after tossing for 10 touchdowns, the Rams QB has thrown fro 356 yards on 32-of-65 passing, while running in a pair of scores.
  • Kicker Aldo Galvin continues to make a name for himself. He enters the weekend closing in on a pair of Rams program records - points scored and made field goals.
  • Regina begins a two week swing away from home next weekend, starting with a trip to Manitoba before heading north to take on the Golden Bears.
