Week 2 WCSA regular season - Dinos Fastball update

The second week of the AIWFA schedule saw games being played in Calgary at Shouldice fields. Dinos were scheduled for five games over the three day competition. First up for the Dinos was Mount Royal University in a Crowchild Trail matchup. The Cougars are the newest member team of AIWFA and are competing in their first season in the league. Dinos took the game by a score of 11-2 Friday night. 
Dinos opened the scoring in the first inning as Gabriela Coderre doubled, scoring one run. MRU tied the game up, but in the bottom of the third, Dinos broke out as Hayley Reid homered to left field, scoring three runs. Then a walk by Leah Weinkauf followed to extend the lead to 6-2. Dinos added to their lead scoring five runs on two hits in the bottom of the fourth inning. An MRU error scored one run, Coderre doubled, scoring two runs, and Chloe Maher homered to left field, scoring two runs.  
Mia Pielak earned the win for the Dinos as the starting pitcher gave up four hits and two runs (one earned) over four innings, striking out three and walking none. Emma Stephens threw one inning of shutout ball for University of Calgary in relief as she gave up zero hits, striking out one and walking none. 
Coderre led the Dinos with three hits in three at bats. Reid drove the middle of the lineup, leading University of Calgary with three runs batted in as she went 1-for-3 on the day. Megan Stevens collected two hits for University of Calgary in two at bats. Overall, the team had patience at the plate, collecting five walks for the game.
 
Saturday morning saw the Dinos facing the University of Regina in their first game. Dinos came out on the wrong end of 5-4 defeat as the Cougars walked-off the win. The game was tied at four in the bottom of the seventh when Brooke Bentz singled for the Cougars scoring the winning run. 
Dinos again go on the board in the first inning after Gabriela Coderre homered to center field, scoring three runs. Cougars rebounded as they took the lead 5-4, in the bottom of the seventh thanks to singles by Saige Tondell, and Bentz.  
Madison Belden took the loss for the Dinos as the reliever went two and two-thirds innings, surrendering four runs (three earned) on seven hits, striking out three and walking two. Emma Stephens led things off in the circle for University of Calgary as the starting pitcher allowed five hits and one run over four innings, striking out four and walking one.  
Emily Freidt set the tone at the top of the lineup, leading the Dinos with two hits in two at bats, with two walks as she reached base four times. Coderre provided pop in the middle of the lineup, and led the team with three RBI's.day.  
 
Second game on Saturday saw the Dinos taking on the University of Victoria. Dinos rebounded from the Cougars loss as they defeated the Vikes by a score of 12-5. Dinos exploded in the third inning as they plated eight runs.  Chloe Maher tripled, scoring one run, an error scored one run, Chloe Kinghorn singled, scoring one run, Megan Stevens singled, scoring one run, Emily Friedt doubled, scoring two runs, Gabriela Coderre doubled, scoring one run, and Maher up for the second time in the inning singled again scoring another run. 
Madison Belden earned the win for the Dinos.  The right-handed pitcher gave up five hits and four runs (three earned) over four innings as she struck out one and had one walk. Mia Pielak appeared in relief for the Dinos. The team accumulated 14 hits in the game as Coderre went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the Dinos in hits. Stephens went 1-for-3 at the plate as the first baseman led the team with three runs batted in. Maher and Freidt each collected multiple hits for the Dinos. Kelsey Kurek led University of Calgary with two walks. Overall, the team had a strong eye at the plate, accumulating five walks for the game. University of Calgary turned one double play in the game.
 
Sunday saw the Dinos first taking on the UBC Okanagan Heat in a close, well played game that saw both teams displaying playoff intensity levels of play. Dinos held an early 1-0 lead as they failed to capitalize on adding to their lead as the Heat made some stunning defensive plays to rob Dinos hitters at crucial times Three diving catches by the Heat prevented the Dinos from padding their lead and UBC Okanagan was able to score two runs in the top of the fifth inning and the defence held the lead the rest of the game. Cassidy Kellow singled, scoring two in the fifth. Dinos got on the board in the first inning after Gabriela Coderre doubled, scoring one run as she continued her excellent play on the weekend.
Mia Pielak pitched a great game but took the loss for University of Calgary. The starting pitcher went four and one-third innings, allowing two runs on three hits, striking out one and walking none.  The team played a very solid game defensively making some great outs.  
Coderre went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead University of Calgary in hits. Emily Freidt paced University of Calgary with two walks. Overall, the team again showed a good eye at the plate, collecting five walks for the game.
 
Final game of the weekend saw the Dinos snatching the lead late in their 11-9 victory over SAIT. Dinos saw themselves down 9-8 in the top of the seventh inning when Emma Stephens homered to center field, scoring three runs. University of Calgary rallied for the victory despite trailing 9-5 in the fourth.The Dinos got on the board in the first inning after Mia Pielak singled, scoring one run.Dinos made the score 9-8 in the top of the sixth inning when Gabriela Coderre, continued her clutch hitting by hitting a homerun center field, scoring two runs, and Pielak singled, scoring one run.  
Madison Belden earned the win for the Dinos as the reliever surrendered six hits and three runs over four and one-third innings, striking out four and walking none. Kate Gross stepped in the circle first for University of Calgary.  
Dinos piled up 16 hits in the game. Emily Freidt led the team with four hits in five at bats from the leadoff position. Stephens went 2-for-3 at the plate as the infielder led the team with three runs batted in. Pielak, McKenna Regier, and Hallie Miller each collected multiple hits for University of Calgary. University of Calgary turned one double play in the game and played another strong defensive game. 

Overall the Dinos went 3-2 over the weekend as they were able to play in front of local fans and family before hitting the road next weekend in Saskatchewan.
