FIVE THINGS TO KNOW
1. HEAD-TO-HEAD – The series marks the 30th-ever meeting between the provincial rivals in the Canada West Final. The Golden Bears and Dinos last met in the final in 2014 and 2015, with Alberta sweeping both series. Additionally, Calgary last hosted the CW Final in 1996, and the last time they hosted Alberta in the postseason was a year later in the divisional final. However, the last time the two teams met this season, Calgary defeated the then No. 2 team in the country in both weekend contests, 4-0 in Calgary and 3-2 in Edmonton.
2. BANNER UPDATE – Calgary will be playing for their ninth conference title in program history. The last time the Dinos won the CW Final was in 1996. For the Golden Bears, they won their 29th CW title last season, which was also their fourth conference title in five years.
3. COACHING HONOUR – Calgary head coach
Mark Howell has been named Canada West's Coach of the Year, which he has already won twice previously (2011 & 2014). He's also been honoured with the U SPORTS Coach of the Year before, winning that award in 2011.
4. ROOKIE HONOURS – The Canada West Rookie of the Year award has been given to Alberta's Jakin Smallwood. He scored on 25.4% of his shots this season and finished sixth in the conference in scoring with 35 points in 26 games. For Calgary, rookie netminder
Carl Tetachuk has been named the CW Goalie of the Year. He earned the second-best save percentage in the conference at .914 and recorded two shutouts this season, one of them being against the Golden Bears back on Nov. 25 in a 4-0 win at home.
5. FLIGHTS BOOKED – With the Dinos' win over the Saskatchewan Huskies in the conference semifinal, they secured a spot at the U SPORTS Championship in Charlottetown, PEI starting Mar. 16. Additionally, the Golden Bears have also clinched a spot in the University Cup after their series win over the UBC Thunderbirds.
