The University of Calgary Dinos swimming program is set to host the Best in the West this weekend, as the 2023 Canada West Swimming Championships come to the UCalgary Aquatic Centre Friday through Sunday.
Calgary has a very long and very strong tradition of success in the pool, and this weekend figures to be no different. Last year, the Dinos men claimed their 21st conference championship - tied for the most in Canada West history. That came just one season after the women's team claimed their ninth conference title in program history. Both teams once again figure to be key players in this year's conference meet, with Calgary ranking second in the nation on both the men's and women's sides going into the weekend.
This year marks the sixth time the Dinos have hosted the conference meet in the last 25 years. They have finished first or second on both sides in all five of the previous championships, including winning the men's title on home soil back in 2006 and sweeping both trophies back in 2002.
Tickets for this weekend's meet are on sale now, with both single-day and full weekend passes available
here.
Dinos Men's Volleyball (5-3)

Saturday, November 25 | Calgary vs. Mount Royal (4-4) | Jack Simpson Gym | 6:00 p.m. | Watch | Live Stats
For the second straight weekend, the Dinos men's volleyball team is on campus, this time hosting Mount Royal for the latest instalment of the Crowchild Classic Friday and Saturday inside The Jack.
Calgary enters the weekend at 5-3 while outscoring their opponents 21 sets to 12 on the season. Their only three losses have all taken a full five sets, while all of their wins have come in either three or four. Last time out, the Dinos nearly pulled off a memorable comeback on Friday before falling just short in five. The next day, they made the adjustments for a convincing 3-0 sweep.
The Dinos and Cougars have had plenty of memorable chapters since MRU joined Canada West back in 2012, including last year's sweep by Calgary in the post-season. The two programs are 5-5 in their last 10 regular season showdowns.
Dinos Women's Volleyball (3-5)
Friday, November 24 | Calgary vs. Mount Royal (1-7) | Jack Simpson Gym | 6:00 p.m. | Watch | Live Stats
Saturday, November 25 | Calgary vs. Mount Royal (1-7) | Jack Simpson Gym | 7:30 p.m. | Watch | Live Stats
Calgary's women's volleyball squad will look to get back on track this weekend when they host Mount Royal for a pair of matches inside the Jack Simpson Gym, starting Friday.
The Dinos saw their three-game win streak snapped last weekend and head into this week's Crowchild Classic at 3-5. That record doesn't tell the full story, however, as the Dinos have been right there in every match and seemingly every set. Despite the losses last weekend, Calgary was within four points in four of the six frames. A few moments here and there and the Dinos easily can be right back in the mix.
This weekend's showdown will also be a playoff rematch for the Calgary women. A season ago, they opened the season on MRU's campus and knocked off the then-defending national silver medallists for a 3-0 sweep before the Cougars claimed a pair of tight contests in postseason play at Kenyon Court to end the Dinos' 2022-23 campaign.
Dinos Men's Hockey (11-2-1)
Friday, November 24 | Calgary vs. UBC (11-3-0) | Father David Bauer Arena | 7:00 p.m. | Watch | Live Stats
Saturday, November 25 | Calgary vs. UBC (11-3-0) | Father David Bauer Arena | 3:00 p.m. | Watch | Live Stats
It's a heavyweight showdown inside Father David Bauer Arena this weekend as the No. 4 Dinos men's hockey team is set to host the No. 7 UBC Thunderbirds for a pair of Canada West contests, with first-place on the line. Friday's puck drop is set for 7 p.m., while Saturday's rematch is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start.
The Dinos have been on fire since their bye week at the end of October, going 6-0 since the start of the month, outscoring their opponents 29-10 over that span. Even more impressive, 14 different players have scored at least one goal over that span, headlined by Colson Gengenbach with five to up his season total to 12 - tops in the conference thus far.
This weekend's showdown is a big one, as the Thunderbirds come to Calgary at 11-3 after starting the season 10-0. Saskatchewan swept UBC in Vancouver last weekend to knock them from first to third in the top-heavy Canada West standings at the mid-way point. The two teams haven't played in over a year, as the T-Birds split the season-opening set at home a year ago before Calgary turned in wins of 7-1 and 2-1 in Calgary back on Nov. 4-5 of last season. This weekend's showdown is the lone head-to-head for the Dinos and Thunderbirds this year.

The Dinos women's hockey squad continues its challenging four-game road swing this weekend with a trip to Vancouver to take on league-leading UBC for a pair of games, starting Friday at 8 p.m. MT.
At the halfway point of the season, it's been tough sledding thus far for Calgary. The team has been tied or held the lead in the third period of 10 of its 14 games but just hasn't been able to get over the hump late in games.
Meanwhile, the T-Birds have yet to lose a game in regulation this season, with their three losses all coming either in overtime or a shootout. UBC heads into the weekend ranked third in the nation having scored 61 goals so far this season – by far the top tally in all of U SPORTS.
Dinos Women's Basketball (6-0)
Friday, November 24 | Calgary at Saskatchewan (6-0) | Physical Activity Complex | 5:00 p.m. MT | Watch | Live Stats
Saturday, November 25 | Calgary at Saskatchewan (6-0) | Physical Activity Complex | 4:00 p.m. MT | Watch | Live Stats
The Dinos women's hoops team also has a top-10 showdown this weekend, as No. 4 Calgary travels to take on No. 2 Saskatchewan in the first big test for the Dinos this season. The action gets underway Friday at 5 p.m. MT, with Saturday's rematch set for 4 p.m. MT.
Calgary is off to one of its best starts in program history. The team is 6-0 for the third time under head coach Damian Jennings. During the 2019-20 season, the Dinos got off to a 14-0 start before a trip to Saskatchewan that saw the two teams split. Jennings' squad finished that season 18-2 in conference play earning another trip to nationals.
Through six games this season, the Dinos lead the nation in both points score (532) and points allowed (285), averaging an 89-48 win.
Meanwhile, the Huskies aren't far behind Calgary in any statistical category. Head coach Lisa Thomaidis saw her team earn a hard-fought season-opening sweep on the road against defending conference champion Alberta before sizable wins over MacEwan and UBC. Carly Ahlstrom leads the team in both scoring (15.2 ppg) and rebounding (6.8 rpg) thus far.
Dinos Men's Basketball (2-4)
Friday, November 24 | Calgary at Saskatchewan (4-2) | Physical Activity Complex | 7:00 p.m. MT | Watch | Live Stats
Saturday, November 25 | Calgary at Saskatchewan (4-2) | Physical Activity Complex | 6:00 p.m. MT | Watch | Live Stats
Calgary's men's basketball squad is also off to Saskatchewan this season, looking to get things back on track after a pair of tight losses on the road last weekend. Friday's contest against the Huskies is set for a 7 p.m. MT tip, while Saturday's game is scheduled for 6 p.m. MT.
After two wins over top-10 programs in Victoria and Manitoba, the Dinos have clearly shown they can play with any team in the country this season. But the consistency isn't quite there yet for a group that is experienced but still learning how to play together. Mount Royal transfer Nate Petrone has proven to be one of the most elite scorers in Canada West this season, averaging 22.3 points per game, so far.
The Dinos and Huskies have only met twice in conference play since 2020 – a pair of wins for Calgary at home last season. The Dinos have now claimed 13 wins in a row over Saskatchewan dating back to a Canada West Bronze Medal win in overtime back on March 4, 2017. Calgary owns a 103-51 head-to-head record in conference play against the Huskies, though that margin is much closer with just a 42-41 edge in games in Saskatchewan.

Saturday, November 25 | Huskie Open | Saskatoon, Sask. | Education Gym | 8:00 a.m. MT
The Dinos wrestling teams are back in action for the final time in 2023, heading to the University of Saskatchewan for a pair of meets, starting Friday.
Calgary heads into the weekend ranked No. 1 in the nation on the women's side and No. 3 on the men's side. They will be going up against stiff competition, as the Huskies men are ranked second nationally, while the women are currently third.
The Dinos haven't competed since Oct. 20-21 when they defeated Saskatchewan in a head-to-head on the women's side, while the men dropped a tight battle.
