Howell, Jozsa named to U SPORTS All-Star staff

TORONTO – University of Calgary Dinos men's hockey head coach Mark Howell and video coach Alex Jozsa have both been named to the staff of the 2023 U SPORTS Men's Hockey All-Stars, set to compete at Canada's National Junior Team Selection camp in Oakville, Ont., from Dec. 12-13.

Howell is in his 15th season as head coach of the University of Calgary Dinos, coming off his most successful season to date a year ago. Howell guided the Dinos to a program-record 25-3 regular-season mark before claiming the program's latest Canada West Championship in 2022-23. For his efforts, he was named the U SPORTS Coach of the Year for the second time in his career, as well as claiming his third Canada West Coach of the Year honors.

Howell has coached the Dinos to postseason competition in every year he has patrolled the bench for the Scarlet & Gold. He has also led the program to the U CUP three times and recently claimed his 300th U SPORTS win while serving as Calgary's head coach.

The Red Deer, Alta. native also has extensive experience coaching at both the provincial and national levels. Just this past January, he helped coach Team Canada to a gold medal at the FISU World University Games in Lake Placid.

Meanwhile, Jozsa is in his sixth season as the video coach for the Dinos. Jozsa was the recipient of the 2023 Murray Fraser Award at the Night of the Dino for his tireless work with the Dinos hockey program. His role expanded in recent seasons, now providing pre-scouts, as well as developing databases and stat packages to better prepare the team for upcoming opponents.

Brett Gibson of the Queen's Gales has been selected as the head coach of the squad, while McGill's David Urquhart (assistant coach), RMC's Richard Lim (assistant coach), Queen's Jamie Nicholl-Carne (equipment manager) and Windsor's Adam Ellwood (athletic therapist) will join Howell and Jozsa on this year's staff.

This will mark the eighth year the U SPORTS All-Stars have faced off against Canada's National Junior Team Prospects, who are vying for roster spots at the 2024 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship being held in Gothenburg, Sweden from Dec. 26, 2023 - Jan. 5, 2024.
