CALGARY – Four goals in the final seven minutes flipped a 1-0 lead for the University of Calgary Dinos into a 4-1 win for the Mount Royal Cougars Friday night from the Flames Community Arenas.
The win moves MRU to 3-2 on the year, while the Dinos fall to 2-3.
Calgary got on the board just before the end of the first period, taking advantage of an MRU penalty with 35 seconds left. The Dinos capitalized on this advantage, with
Courtney Kollman and
Sydney Mercier assisting
Brooklin Fry in securing a 1 – 0 lead just 16 seconds before the first intermission.
The Dinos nearly doubled their advantage halfway through the second when
Josie McLeod got behind the backline and got off a pair of shots, but Kaitlyn Ross came up with two huge saves for the Cougars to keep things close.
MRU started the third period with a power play advantage, applying early pressure on the Dinos, but were unable to capitalize on the advantage as the Dinos displayed resilience on defence.
With an assist from Sydney Benko and Lyndsey Janes, Cougars Jerzey Watteyne found the back of the net, tying the score at 1-1 with seven minutes left in the game.
Five minutes remained in the period when MRU's Jori Hansen-Young scored on the Dinos net, giving her team a 2-1 lead. She was assisted by Lyndsey Janes and Emma Bergesen.
Jerzey Watteyne assisted MRU's Sydney Benko in securing an additional goal for the Cougars with three minutes remaining, extending their lead to 3-1.
In the last two minutes of the game, the Dinos pulled their goalie, creating a six- to-five player advantage. However, with just five seconds left, MRU's Gabby Lindsay scored into the Dinos empty net, leading her team to 4-1 victory.
