CALGARY – Athena Hauck's third-period tally stood up as the game-winning goal for the Mount Royal Cougars in a 3-1 decision over the University of Calgary Dinos women's hockey team on Saturday night at Father David Bauer Arena.
It was the second consecutive night where Mount Royal was able to earn the victory with their performance in the final frame. The Cougars move to 4-2 on the season, while the Dinos slip to 2-4.
"The team played hard. They worked hard, they competed hard, they stuck to the plan and did a great job," said
Josh Gosling, who assumes the interim head coach title for the Dinos next week. "We're going to keep building. We're going to take a lot of the stuff we learned this weekend and the past two weekends to take the next step and keep pushing."
Mount Royal looked to strike early on Saturday, generating 12 shots on goal on Calgary's
Gabriella Durante. The Cougars' best chance of the opening frame came in the final minutes as Jordyn Hutt went one-on-one with Durante but was turned away by a glove save.
The Dinos took the lead four minutes into the second when
Jada Johns scored her first goal in Canada West. The puck was carried into the offensive zone by
Evelyn Lawrence who was stopped on an in-close chance by goaltender Kaitlyn Ross. The rebound popped out to Johns who released a laser that beat the Cougars netminder.
"All of our first years have been great, and the team has done a great job building them up. There are two hard plays before that goal, so it's a combination of a lot of great work," said Gosling.
Mount Royal tied the game halfway through the second period on a power play as Aliya Jomha tucked a loose puck between the post and Durante's pad.
The Cougars took their first lead of the night in the opening minutes of the third period. An initial shot from the right side was deflected in front of the net and left the Calgary goaltender out of position for the third attempt where Hauck knocked the puck in.
Despite two power play opportunities and 16 shots on goal, the Dinos were unable to find the back of the net again. Allee Gerrard iced the game with an empty net goal in the final minute.
Durante finished with 33 saves, while Ross made 27 shots.
"Gabs (Durante) is a rock for us. When she's confident, the team builds off her and her energy," said Gosling.
The Dinos face the Alberta Pandas next week in a home-and-home set, starting on Friday, Oct. 20 at Father David Bauer Arena. Tickets are on sale at GoDinos.com/Tickets.
