CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos women's hockey team will take on the MacEwan University Griffins in the first games back following the winter break.
The Dinos will travel to Edmonton Friday evening before hosting the Griffins Saturday at 6 p.m. at Father David Bauer Arena. Both games can be seen on Canada West TV.
FIVE THINGS TO KNOW
1. CURRENT STANDINGS – Coming into the new year, the Dinos sit in sixth place in the Canada West standings with a 7-8-3 record in 18 games played. The Griffins are sitting in eighth place after playing 16 games, and hold a 3-12-1 record.
2. TOP SCORERS – The Dinos
Alli Borrow and
Elizabeth Lang continue to dominate the scoreboards and have amassed 30 points together this season. Borrow has nine goals and four assists, while Lang has eight goals and nine assists. They are sitting in third and fifth place among the Canada West top scorers this season. The Griffins' Sydney Hughson takes the top spot on her team with three goals this season and one assist.
3. EARLIER THIS SEASON – Starting in the preseason, the Dinos and Griffins played twice with an outcome of two Calgary wins. In conference play, the Dinos took two of three from Canada West's latest addition last season – the first time the two teams played conference games since the 2008-09 season.
4. NEARING THE END – Following this weekend, the playoffs are rapidly approaching with only five weekends left in the regular season. The Dinos have four opponents left on this year's schedule after this weekend. The Canada West Playoffs will begin on Feb. 17, with the top-six teams earning a spot in this year's postseason.
5. QUOTABLE – "The second half is always exciting in our conferences. Every game is competitive, and every team has proven they can win on any given night. Our job is to remain focused on our team, ensuring we are making gains every week. Our style of play has been established, now we need to execute our details at a higher level. Playoff hockey starts now for us and that will be our mindset." – Dinos head coach
