Calgary packs rink for Ukrainian U25 National Team

CALGARY – In front of a capacity crowd of over 1,700 people inside Father David Bauer Arena, the University of Calgary Dinos men's hockey program welcomed the Ukrainian U25 National Team Monday night in the second game of the Hockey Can't Stop Tour.

It was a night filled with positivity and support.

Ukraine brought blue and gold supporters to their feet with their first goal of the tour early in the second period for the 1-0 lead. The Dinos – the second-ranked team in all of Canada – were able to answer back with two goals in the second before closing things out with an empty netter for a 3-1 final score.

"We all really appreciate the support," Mykhailo Simchuk said after the game. "This is a good push for our team [as we get ready for the FISU World University Games next week]. I can't say we played perfectly tonight, but we played better than our last game."

The Hockey Can't Stop Tour provides the Ukrainian team with the opportunity to play and prepare for the upcoming Winter University Games while raising money for refugees and Ukrainian communities torn apart by the war.

"We really appreciate this tour. It's good for us. Good for our fund, good for [future generations] in Ukraine. Canada really helped us."

After a scoreless opening frame, Ukraine was first to find the back of the net just over nine minutes into the second period. Using the man advantage on the power play, Ukraine worked the puck around the zone before Mykhailo Simchuk sent a wrister on target that just trickled past Dinos goaltender Carl Stankowski to make it 1-0.

Calgary responded with a pair of goals in the second. The first came when Brendan De Jong sent a slap pass for Jaeger White, who perfectly redirected the puck on frame to tie things up at the 13:55 mark. Bradley Schoonbaert later gave the Dinos the lead on a counter-attack goal with just over a minute before the second intermission.

The two teams continued to battle on the ice in a very entertaining contest. Ukraine created numerous chances to tie things up, but the combination of Stankowski and Brodan Salmond in net for the Dinos kept the score the same. With the visitors making a final push, Calgary was able to control the puck and counter with an empty netter by Tyson Upper in the final seconds to close out the scoring on this tremendous community event.

The Ukrainian U25 squad will now head to Edmonton for the third game of the tour on Tuesday, taking on the Alberta Golden Bears, before closing things out on Jan. 9 at Manitoba. All games can be streamed on Canada West TV. Following the tour, the team heads Lake Placid, New York for this year's World University Games, starting Jan. 11 and running through Jan. 23. A number of Dinos will be on hand to represent UCalgary, including Dinos men's hockey head coach Mark Howell and captain Noah King, who will be representing Team Canada at this year's games.
