Record-breaking win streak reaches 14 games

CALGARY – The No. 2 University of Calgary Dinos men's hockey team extended their win streak with their 14th straight victory, defeating the MacEwan Griffins 7-5 on Friday night at Father David Bauer Arena to set a new program record, previously set in the 2013-14 season.

In a tightly contested matchup tied, 4-4 after the first two frames, the Dinos came alive in the third period and fired 17 shots on goal and picked up three more goals and secure the win over the visiting Griffins.

"Any time you win 14 in a row in our league, that's half your season so the team has really bought in and worked hard so that's a great accomplishment," said Dinos head coach Mark Howell about the win. "We were a little sloppy, a little casual and didn't necessarily play as we wanted, but we got the goals we needed."

It was the Griffins that were out hot, opening the scoring in the first period with a power play goal by fifth-year forward Merritt Oszytko and doubled down with a second score by Kobe Mohr after getting tangled up with Calgary's netminder Carl Tetachuk to lead the Dinos 2-0 in the first 12 minutes.

The Dinos answered with a pair of their own, starting with a deflection into the net by Josh Maser, assisted by Sean Strange and Brendan De Jong, and followed by Arjun Atwal tipping the puck into the net with Strange picking up his second assist of the night to bring the Dinos even.

The second period started scrappy and continued to go back and forth.

Atwal made the most of the man advantage notching his second goal of the night, assisted by Max Patterson and Connor Gutenberg during the Calgary power play 4:41 into the second frame bringing the score to 3-2 for the Dinos.

Just over a minute later MacEwan's Spencer McLean popped one in off a cross-crease pass for the Griffins tying up the game once again.

Bradley Schoonbaert got in on the action late in the second period putting Calgary back on top, with an assist from Patterson, but just over a minute later Neithan Salame out of Edmonton notched his own goal, unassisted to tie up the game 4-4 heading into the third.

The Dinos outpaced the Griffins in the final 20 minutes of play, outshooting the visiting team 17-4.

Only 15 seconds into the third Calgary's Connor Horning wired a shot into the top corner to put the home team back in front, and minutes later, he assisted team captain Noah King on a goal to extend the Dinos' lead to 6-4.

Gutenberg registered his third point of the game for the Dinos with a power play goal late in the third period. The Griffins couldn't claw back enough to take down the home team finishing the evening 7-5.

The Dinos and Griffins will square off once again on Saturday evening in Edmonton with a 5 p.m. puck drop.
