Dinos face first road test at No. 7 Regina

CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos (0-1) will look to get their 2022 season on track to their when they head east to take on the Regina Rams (1-0) at Mosaic Stadium.

Things will get underway at 7 p.m. MT on Friday as the Rams host Calgary for their 2022 home opener.

Calgary will be looking to bounce back after a tough loss to the Saskatchewan Huskies last weekend, but things won't come easy when they clash with the Rams who started their season with a win on the road against the nationally ranked Manitoba Bisons.

Headlines

•    Calgary faced off against Regina just once last season, a 34-21 loss on the road. Previous to that loss, Calgary had won five in a row against the Rams dating back to the 2017 season.
•    Regina's win last week saw them jump into the U SPORTS Top-10 this week, slotting in at No. 7.
•    Friday's matchup will be the first of two between the Rams and Dinos this season, with Regina scheduled to come to Calgary on Oct. 22.
•    Calgary's offensive line will have their hands full Friday, as Regina's Anthony Bennett was named Canada West Defensive Player of the Week after racking up three sacks against the Bisons last weekend
•    The Dinos' young roster will look to improve on their first-half performance in Week 2, as they gave up 31 points in the opening half against the Huskies before settling in and just allowing 13 in the second.

Last Week: lost to Saskatchewan 44-5
Next Week: host Alberta

  • With his first start officially under his belt, quarterback Matteo Spoletini will get the nod under centre again in Week 2. Spoletini finished last weekend 9-for-14 for 81 yards with no turnovers. There should be room for improvement, as Manitoba quarterback Des Catellier was able to put 390 yards against the Rams' defence in their opener.
  • Calgary was able to find some success on the ground against the Huskies, finishing the game with 102 total rushing yards.
  • Jacob Biggs was all over the field against the Huskies, finishing the game with a game-high nine tackles.
  • When Calgary has to punt, they can be confident in their punter Chris MacLean, who averaged an incredible 52.4 yards on nine punts last weekend.
  • The Dinos will look to limit the big plays against the Rams, as they found themselves down 14-1 against the Huskies before their offence had even seen the field.
  • Calgary will return home next weekend for a meeting with their neighbours from the north – the Alberta Golden Bears.

  • Bennett was not the only award winner for the Rams this week as linebacker Ryder Varga was named Canada West's Special Teams Player of the Week, after blocking a punt that was returned for a touchdown against the Bisons.
  • In the first start of his career, quarterback Noah Pelletier was solid against the Bisons, competing 14-of-24 passes for 244 yards with one touchdown and one interception.
  • The Dinos will have to try and shut down Pelletier's favourite target in Bennett Stusek, as the hometown receiver finished with five catches for 134 yards against Manitoba.
  • Regina's defenders made some big plays against the Bisons, picking off Catellier twice, while also sacking him five different times.
  • The Rams will stay home next weekend as well when they get set to host their inter-province rival the Saskatchewan Huskies.
