T-Birds come to McMahon Friday

CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos (0-4) return home for their lone regular season matchup with the UBC Thunderbirds (1-3) Friday night at McMahon stadium.

Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. on Friday evening, where the Dinos will look to kickstart the second half of their season with a win against their rivals from the west. The game can be streamed on Canada West TV.

Both teams will be looking for an improved result from Week 4, as the Dinos were defeated by the Manitoba Bisons, while the Thunderbirds were defeated by the Regina Rams.

Headlines
  • Calgary has won the past 10 regular season or playoff matchups against the Thunderbirds, with their last loss coming back in 2015.
  • Saturday's matchup will be the only meeting between the two squads this season.
  • The two teams did face off in an exhibition match earlier this season in Vernon, B.C. Both squads used the matchup to get their entire roster a look at game action, with the game ending in a 28-7 Thunderbirds victory.
  • The Dinos' young roster was significantly shorthanded against the Bisons last week and will hope to get some of their key starters back in time for this one.
  • Both teams will be looking for a win to jump back into the playoff conversation in what is a tight Canada West conference.

CALGARY DINOS (0-4)
Last Week: lost to Manitoba 46-4
Next week: Bye
  • Without their top three tacklers in the lineup, fourth-year linebacker Subomi Oyesoro stepped up in a big way for the Dinos' defence against the Herd. He was all over the field, leading the way with a career-high 11.5 tackles.
  • Punter Chris MacLean continues to aid his team in the field position battle, averaging 49.1 yards a punt, including a booming 65-yard punt versus the Bisons.
  • The Dinos will look to improve their run defence against the Thunderbirds after giving up 9.9 yards per carry to Manitoba running back Breydon Stubbs last weekend.
  • Gob Deng continues his impressive play on offence, as he currently leads the Canada West in receptions per game, hauling in an average six per contest.
  • Calgary will enjoy the traditional Thanksgiving weekend bye next week, before heading north for a rematch with the Alberta Golden Bears on Oct. 15.

UBC Thunderbirds (1-3)
Last Week: lost to Regina 21-13
Next week: Bye
  • Statistically, Thunderbirds quarterback Garrett Rooker had his most impressive outing of the season in Week 4, completing 26 passes for 334 yards – both season highs.
  • The Thunderbirds will bring in their dynamic duo at running back this season, with Isaiah Knight and Dane Kapler currently sitting fourth and fifth, respectively, in terms of Canada West rush yards per game.
  • Defensively, the Thunderbirds are happy to have fourth-year Daniel Kwamou back in the lineup. In his first game back in the lineup, the Calgary-born linebacker finished with a game-high eight tackles against the Rams, including one tackle-for-loss.
  • Calgary will have to keep an eye on the dangerous Edgerrin Williams, who averages 122.3 all-purpose yards per game, good for 12th in all of U SPORTS.
  • UBC will also enjoy the Thanksgiving bye before hosting Manitoba in Week 5.
