CALGARY – After suffering their first loss of the 2022 season, the University of Calgary Dinos women's soccer team will look to get back on track in a busy weekend at home, taking on Victoria and UBC.
The Vikes come to Dinosaur Field Friday night for a 6 p.m. tilt, before Sunday's noon showdown with top-ranked UBC. Both games will be streamed live on Canada West TV.
FIVE THINGS TO KNOW
1. LOOKING TO REBOUND – After a 4-0 start to the season, the Dinos suffered their first setback of the season last weekend, falling 2-1 at Alberta before a 1-0 setback against the defending Canada West champion MacEwan.
2. GETTING EVERYONE INVOLVED – One year after leaning on U SPORTS Player of the Year and goal-scoring phenom
Montana Leonard to lead the offensive charge, the Dinos appear to have a much more balanced attack through the first six games of the 2022 season. Calgary has found the back of the net 17 times so far this season, with 10 different players adding their name to the scoring column. The 10 different goal-scorers already equals the same number from all of last season and is tied with Western for the most in the nation in the early going.
3. SETTING THE TABLE – Third-year forward
Rachel Barlow has been simply dominant for the Dinos offensive attack so far this season. The Calgary native has already tied her career high for goals in a season with three but even more impressively, she has been setting up her teammates. Barlow has an incredible six assists already this season through just six games, the top total in all of U SPORTS coming into the weekend.
4. A SHUTOUT IN EVERY SENSE – In their 5-0 win over Winnipeg earlier this season, the Dinos not only kept a clean sheet in the scoring column, but they also outshot the Wesmen 43-0 on the afternoon. That marked the first time Calgary didn't allow a shot by their opponents in seven years, last doing so in a 0-0 tie at UNBC on Oct. 4, 2015 when they outshot the Timberwolves 19-0.
5. SCOUTING THE OPPONENT – Victoria comes into the weekend 2-4-1 overall and sixth in the CW Pacific standings. The Vikes are coming off a 2-0 roadtrip with a 2-0 win at Winnipeg and a 1-0 win at Manitoba last weekend. Ruby Nicholas leads the Victoria offence with a pair of goals, while goalie Kayley Lidstone has already racked up 45 saves on the season – third most in the nation.
UBC enters the weekend with a perfect 7-0 record and the No. 1 ranking in U SPORTS. The Thunderbirds boast the two top goal scorers in the country, as midfielder Katalin Talnai leads the way with eight, one ahead of forward Danielle Steer at seven. UBC does have a Friday night contest at UNBC before making the trip to Calgary for Sunday's noon kickoff.
