VANCOUVER – The University of Calgary Dinos women's soccer team ended their 2025 Canada West season on a high note, defeating the rival Mount Royal Cougars 3-0 in Friday's bronze-medal match at UBC's Ken Woods Field.
First-half goals from
Grace Moore and
Kaleigh Major put the Dinos in control, before
Jayden Berg headed home a third in the 75th minute to seal the win.
Both teams battled the elements and the disappointment of narrow semi-final losses, but Calgary showed little tiredness from their late-night shootout loss just 15 hours earlier, with a dominant first-half performance.
"We were absolutely gutted yesterday," Dinos head coach
Diogo Raposo, said after the victory. "We've got a special, special group and a special group that we felt could go and compete well at nationals and show on that stage. It wasn't meant to be, but that's football and that's life as well.
"Our players, they really do enjoy being together. I think we have an amazing culture, and you saw that on the field, the character, the passion, the heart for each other, but also for the game and the program. I'm really proud of their performance."
Moore got the early breakthrough for Calgary with a well-taken goal just six minutes in, after being played in by a great cross-field pass from
Rowyn James.
Dinos defender
Brooklyn Colvin crashed a shot off a corner off the bar in the 27th minute, but the Dinos weren't to be denied and got their second a minute later with a fantastic long-range 30-yard dipper from Major.
Mount Royal fought back, and Ava Tingstad saw a great chance deflected inches past the far post in the 37th minute, before Caitlyn Vieira just couldn't get the curl on a low shot she was looking for and drove past the right post in first-half stoppage time.
The Cougars came out strong after the restart, but couldn't find a way through a resolute Dinos defence that gave up just six goals all season.
Calgary got their third with 15 minutes to go when Berg got her head on an
Aislin Phillips free kick and put the game to bed.
Tamara Djurisic came close for Mount Royal with a curling free kick, before Filek denied Isabella Dipalma, for what looked like a sure fourth for Calgary.
The Dinos saw out the match to secure the bronze medal and cap a season in which they lost just once in regular-season play.
Calgary graduates 10 players from this year's squad:
Jayden Berg,
Brooklyn Colvin,
Anna Demarbre, Isabella Dipalma, Ella Durjanic,
Katie French,
Lauren Houghton,
Grace Moore,
Aislin Phillips and
Layla Tarraf.
