CALGARY – In a year still dealing with plenty of additional obstacles, University of Calgary student-athletes once again rose to the challenge and posted yet another exceptional academic performance.
A total of 185 Dinos varsity student-athletes – over one-third of all Dinos – were honoured at the annual Academic All-Canadian Breakfast on Tuesday morning. This includes 178 from U SPORTS-sanctioned sports being named Academic All-Canadians, while another seven in the sport of golf added Dinos All-Academic honours by meeting the same criteria in a sport not sanctioned by U SPORTS.
This year's total is the third-highest in a single academic year in Dinos history and puts UCalgary over 3,000 total Academic All-Canadians since the program's inception in 1988.
"Year after year, our student-athletes continue to impress us all with their dedication to their studies," Dinos Director of Athletics Ben Matchett said. "They are truly some of the best and brightest that UCalgary has to offer, representing 12 faculties and every one of our varsity teams. We are proud to once again be among the nation's best."
An impressive 19 individuals achieved a perfect 4.00 grade-point average during the past school year, with that number jumping to 43 total student-athletes maintaining a GPA of 3.90 or higher.
The Faculty of Kinesiology led the way with 43 students earning Academic All-Canadian or Dinos All-Academic status, followed closely by Arts (39), and Science (29). The Schulich School of Engineering tallied 22 this year, while the Haskayne School of Business had 20. The Werklund School of Education (12), Open Studies (10), the Cumming School of Medicine (6), Graduate Studies (6), Nursing (5), Social Work (1), and Veterinary Medicine (1) rounded out the faculties with academic honours from the 2021-22 school year.
All Dinos programs were once again represented on the list, with men's track & field and cross country leading the way with 19, followed closely by women's track & field and cross country with 18. The Canada West Champion women's swimming team posted the most impressive accomplishment, with 12 of the 19 athletes on the 2020-21 roster – 63 percent of the team – earning the accolade.
In order to be named an Academic All-Canadian, one must achieve a minimum 80 percent average (or equivalent) on a full-time course load while consuming U SPORTS eligibility.
