EDMONTON - Staying red hot, the U SPORTS No. 5 Calgary Dinos picked up their 11th-straight win on Saturday night, sweeping the second-ranked Alberta Bears with a 3-2 victory at Clare Drake Arena.
The sweep for Calgary is their first over the Bears since January of 2020, and helps them maintain the top spot in Canada West with a 13-3-0 record. The loss for Alberta, which is their third in four games, sees their record slip to 11-4-1.
Leading the Dinos on Saturday night was a lethal powerplay, one in which Calgary scored all three of their goals on four PP opportunities. Alberta outshot Calgary 27-22, with Dinos starter
Carl Tetachuk making 25 saves to pick up his conference-leading 10th win.
Noah King,
Zach Wytinck and
Max Patterson scored for the visitors, while Dawson Davidson and Josh Prokop scored for the home team.
After racing out to a 3-0 lead over Alberta on Friday night, the Dinos looked sharp again in the first 20 in the rematch. King got the Dinos on the board just four minutes in, beating Bears starter Nick Schneider with his first of the year.
Davidson would answer back 10 minutes later, beating a screened Tetachuk with a powerplay marker of his own. Wytink restored the Calgary lead just three minutes later, however, giving the Dinos a 2-1 lead through 20.
Patterson doubled the lead early in the second with his eighth of the year, which stood as the eventual game-winner.
Alberta held Calgary to just three shots in the third, but struggled to gain quality chances of their own. Prokop scored the lone goal in the third, beating the Dinos goalie five-hole.
The Bears will look to bounce back next weekend, when they battle the MacEwan Griffins. Calgary will face another stiff test, as they visit the Saskatchewan Huskies.
