Dinos go top of the league with 10th win in a row

CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos men's hockey team earned their 10th straight victory, defeating their provincial rival and the country's second-ranked team, the Alberta Golden Bears 4-0 on Friday night at Father David Bauer Arena.

With the win, as well as a Mount Royal Cougars loss to the UBC Thunderbirds, the Dinos take over sole possession of first place in Canada West.

"It is huge for our guys, across the 10 games everyone has been buying in and contributing," said Dinos forward Max Patterson, who recorded two points on Friday. "It is a huge test of us tomorrow going to Alberta, we have to prepare like we did tonight because tomorrow is a big game.

"Alberta always has lively fans, they are fun to play in front of and the Golden Bears play in their rink pretty well. They're going to be flying tomorrow so we have to make sure we match that intensity."

It was Calgary who was flying early and the offence erupted in the first period for three goals. The home team struck first when Zach Wytinick wired a shot from inside the blue line, beating Alberta goaltender Ethan Kruger five minutes into the contest.

Five minutes later Bradley Schoonbaert fired a laser of his own, through a collection of bodies in front of the Alberta goal and found the back of the net. Patterson would extend the Dinos' lead to 3-0 with just four minutes to play in the period as he cashed in on a perfect pass from Josh Maser and deflected the puck in.

Alberta found their footing in the second period, outshooting Calgary 11-9 in the frame. Carl Tetachuk came up with several big saves during the period to keep the Golden Bears off the scoresheet. He would finish the night with 29 saves and earned his second shutout of the year.

With 11:32 remaining in the final period, Riley Stotts delivered the finishing blow. Off a Dinos faceoff win, the Calgary forward wound up for the one-timer from the point and buried it past Kruger.

The Dinos and Golden Bears square off for the final time this season on Saturday night in Edmonton with a 7 p.m. puck drop at Clare Drake Arena.
