LANGLEY, B.C. –
Jadon Joseph broke a Canada West record for the fastest hat trick in conference history to lead the University of Calgary Dinos to a 5-2 win over the Trinity Western Spartans Saturday afternoon from the George Preston Arena.
This continues an impressive hot streak for Calgary, running their win streak to nine in a row and pushing them to 11-3 on the season. TWU falls to 1-13.
Connor Gutenberg got the scoring started early Saturday, collecting the puck from the corner with time and space and he made no mistake to give Calgary a 1-0 lead just 2:26 into the game.
The Spartans did their best to answer shortly after, but
Carl Stankowski was up to the task with a pair of impressive saves to keep the score the same.
Things would stay that way until early in the second. Right after killing off a penalty to start the period, the Dinos instantly went on the attack and had a 3-on-2.
Riley Stotts and
Jake Gricius set teammate Jaegar White up perfectly for a wide-open shot point blank to make it 2-0 with just 1:14 gone in the second.
TWU drew back to within one less than three minutes later. Josh Borynec got behind the defence and took a great lead pass, going one-on-one with the keeper and winning that battle to make it 2-1.
From there, it was the
Jadon Joseph show.
The rookie who transferred to Calgary this past offseason after redshirting last year with the Spartans, re-established the Dinos two-goal lead with a redirected goal on the power play at the 13:29 mark of the second.
Less than a minute later, it was Joseph again. The Sherwood Park, Alta. product took advantage of a turnover and five-holed the TWU keeper for his second goal in less than a minute with 14:13 gone in the second period.
Joseph then completed the natural hat trick with another goal less than one minute later. Once again with a man advantage, the Dinos worked the puck down low where Stotts perfectly threaded a pass to Joseph, who once again redirected it point blank with the clock reading 15:05.
The hat trick in just 1:36 is by far the fastest three goals by a single player in conference history, obliterating the previous record of 5:17 set by Connor Rankin of Mount Royal back in 2016.
Trinity Western got one back late in the second to make it 5-2 in what would prove to be the final after a scoreless third.
Stankowski picks up second win of the season for the Dinos, making 20 saves on the afternoon. Counterpart Berk Berkeliev racked up 42 saves against the high-powered Calgary offence in the loss.
The win is the ninth in a row for the Dinos, the longest win streak for the program since starting the 2013-14 season with 13 consecutive victories.
Up next is a heavyweight battle atop the Canada West standings with the annual Battle of Alberta series set for next weekend. The Golden Bears will come to Father David Bauer Arena for a first-place showdown Friday night at 7 p.m., before the two teams head to Edmonton for the rematch Saturday.
