CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos women's hockey team (4-6-2) will wrap up a four-game homestand this weekend when they take on the Trinity Western Spartans (6-5-1) on Friday and Saturday at Father David Bauer Arena.
Puck drop will take place at 7 p.m. on Friday and 3 p.m. on Saturday.
FIVE THINGS TO KNOW
1. TOP SCORERS – Following a successful weekend,
Elizabeth Lang and
Alli Borrow take the spots for top goal scorers on the team. Lang sits in first place with six goals this season, while Borrow has five after netting a hat trick in this past weekend's games. The Spartans have a three-way tie for their top scorers, as Brooklyn Anderson, Neisha Germann, and Olivia Leier all have four goals thus far.
2. NETMINDERS – The Dinos have had a familiar face in net this season with
Gabriella Durante playing a whopping 677 minutes and having 330 saves to her name – both lead Canada West thus far this season. Meanwhile, the Spartans have a fairly even split in net this year. Mabel Maltais has started seven games and logged 423 minutes, earning a .901 save percentage, while Kate Fawcett has also seen major ice time, starting five games and posting an impressive .933 save percentage.
3. TEAM STANDINGS – The two teams sit side-by-side in the standings heading into the weekend. The Spartans hold a slight edge on Calgary with a 6-5-1 record and 13 points. The Dinos are currently just one spot back with a 4-6-2 record and 10 points this season.
4. PLAYER OF THE WEEK –
Alli Borrow was named Canada West Women's Hockey Player of the Week this week. Borrow is a fifth-year forward for the Dinos and has scored five goals this season and three assists. The weekly honour was more than deserved after the Clearwater, BC product recorded her first collegiate hat trick in the weekend-opening win over Manitoba before assisting in Saturday's comeback effort.
5. OFFENSIVE ERUPTION – After finding the back of the net just six times in the previous four games, the Dinos' offence exploded this past weekend with eight goals in a three-point weekend against Manitoba. Things started Friday with a 4-0 handling of the Bisons before a three-goal third period on Saturday in the comeback effort, tying the game at 4-4 after
Sydney Mercier lit the lamp with just 42 seconds left to send the game to overtime.
