WINNIPEG – A different Bisons team hit the ice on Saturday afternoon at Wayne Fleming Arena, appearing calmer and more collected than in Friday night's 8-2 win by the Calgary Dinos men's hockey team. Manitoba secured the lead twice in periods one and two, thanks to goals from forwards Devon Skoleski and Colton Veloso, but they couldn't hang on in a 4-2 comeback win by the Dinos. Calgary's pressure led to them outshooting and outscoring the Bisons, once again.
There were lots of big hits early in the first from both sides including one from Dinos forward
Josh Maser on Bisons forward Brett Davis. Bisons captain Geordie Keane responded with a big hit on Dinos forward
Max Patterson, sending him down to the ice.
A good chance for the Dinos came when forward
Mack Stewart found a loose puck after a defensive breakdown from the Bisons but was unable to get it past Bisons netminder Ross Hawryluk.
The Bisons remained calm and collected and benefited from it. Some beautiful cross ice passing led to a goal from Skoleski, who found a seam and picked the top corner giving the Bisons a 1-0 lead.
Calgary outshot Manitoba 12-6 in the first period and were rewarded with a late goal on a low one timer at the point from Dinos defenceman
Sean Strange to tie the game.
The second period was dominated by the Dinos, outshooting the Bisons 35-13. Calgary peppered Hawryluk, especially from the point, early in the period.
Despite the pressure, Hawryluk stood on his head. A quick shot from Dinos defenceman
Zach Wytinck was one of the better chances for Calgary, but Hawryluk got his stick on it to steer it wide.
The Bisons struggled to get out of their zone in the period, but magic was made when they did. Veloso picked up the puck on the faceoff circle and hit it off the post, sending it in far side. The goal was the result of a forced turnover thanks to forward Tony Apetagon, once again giving the home team a one-goal lead after 40 minutes.
Calgary's consistent pressure paid off early in the third with a shot from the faceoff circle from their top goal scorer, forward
Jake Gricius, that dribbled through the pads of Hawryluk. It was followed up by a goal from forward
Bradley Schoonbaert, who picked up his own rebound and buried it to give the Dinos their first lead of the game.
The Bison's desperation went into overdrive after the Calgary goal but no dice. An empty netter from Dinos forward
Colson Gengenbach sealed the deal making it a 4-2 game.
With the weekend road sweep, the Dinos have now won seven in a row and improve to 9-3 on the season. They will stay on the road next weekend, heading to Langley, B.C. for a weekend series at Trinity Western.
