Final Four berth on the line in Battle of Alberta

CALGARY – The 2022 Canada West playoffs have arrived for the University of Calgary Dinos women's soccer team as they prepare for a quarterfinal matchup with provincial rivals, the Alberta Pandas, Saturday afternoon.

Kickoff is scheduled for 12 p.m. from Foote Field, with the game scheduled to be streamed live on Canada West TV.

FIVE THINGS TO KNOW

1. How We Got Here – The Dinos turned in an impressive 9-3-2 record in the regular season to finish third in the Canada West Pacific Division with 29 points – just one point shy of second place. Alberta finished the regular season with a 9-4-1 ledger to finish second in the Prairie Division, earning a home playoff game.

2. Matchup History – While there have been plenty of Battle-of-Alberta matchups between these to programs over the years, there have only been three such instances in the playoffs dating back to the 1998 season. That year, Calgary advanced past Alberta to the CW Championship on PKs, while the Pandas flipped that script in 2000. The most recent postseason meeting between the provincial rivals came in 2014 – a 2-1 win for Alberta in the quarterfinals in Edmonton.

3. Postseason History – The Dinos will begin their pursuit of their third Canada West title this weekend, with the first two coming back in 2005 and 2019. The Scarlet & Gold have had a number of deep postseason runs of late. In addition to the 2019 season, they have advanced to nationals three times in the last seven seasons, also doing so in 2015 and 2018.

4. Barlow Setting A High Bar – Dinos third-year forward Rachel Barlow has been one of the clear leaders for her team this season, not only on the field, but also in the stat columns. The local product finished the regular season with a U SPORTS-best 11 assists on the season. Her 17 total points also ranks her fourth in all of Canada, and her three game-winning goals also cracks the top-10 nationally, tying her for eighth.

5. National Rankings – Despite seeing one of the most decorated classes in program history graduate last spring, the Dinos have had loads of success on the field once again, and have spent the majority of this season in the U SPORTS top-10. Calgary finished the regular season ranked eighth in the national rankings, and notably handed No. 1 UBC its lone loss of the year.
