CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos women's hockey team is back home in Calgary this weekend to face off against their crosstown rival, the Mount Royal Cougars.
The first game on Friday will be hosted by the Dinos at Father David Bauer Arena with the puck dropping at 7 p.m., while Mount Royal hosts Saturday's game at Flames Community Arenas at 6 p.m.
FIVE THINGS TO KNOW
1. Season So Far – The Dinos are currently 2-1-1 in their season, while the Cougars are 3-0-1, making them the conference leader early in the season. Calgary is coming off a double OT win against Saskatchewan, while Mount Royal is currently on a three-game winning streak.
2. Rookies Making Their Mark – Out of the top five points leaders for the Dinos, three of them are rookies.
Sydney Mercier has three points from one goal and two assists,
Sophia Zuck has two points from two goals, and
Jolie Nafziger has two points from a goal and an assist. With eight new faces being added to the roster this year, the rookies are not shying away from making an impact for their team in the early going.
3. Goalie Love – Calgary's netminder
Gabriella Durante is currently the second-ranked Canada West goalie with a save percentage of 0.952. She has faced 124 shots so far through four games, only letting six pucks get by.
4. Player To Watch – Mount Royal's captain Tatum Amy was named the Canada West Women's Hockey Player of the Week, leading her team to a winning weekend while notching four points for herself. She is also the current Canada West leader for points heading into the weekend, having eight points from three goals and five assists.
5. Coach's Orders – "There is always excitement when we face off against Mount Royal. They are a great team, and we embrace the opportunity to compete with them. We will look to play our game and continue to grow in the areas we focus on in practice. There are no secrets in the game of hockey, we know getting to the net will be an important part of our game plan." – Dinos head coach
Carla MacLeod.
