CALGARY – Evelyn Lawrence scored with seconds left in regulation, and the University of Calgary Dinos women's hockey team went on to beat the MacEwan University Griffins 2-1 in a shootout Saturday at Father David Bauer Arena.
The result lifts the Dinos' record to 2-4-1-1, while the Griffins dropped to 2-5 for the season.
"I feel relieved," said Dinos head coach Josh Gosling. "I think that we've had a lot of tough bounces over the last couple weeks, we played hard and not loved our outcomes. So I think that this is a good moment to be impressed by our work."
The Dinos outshot the Griffins 40-21, but it took until the final two minutes of regulation for either team to score. Goaltenders Maisie Cope of Calgary and Taya Currie of MacEwan traded saves through two scoreless periods, with Currie finishing the night with 38 saves and Cope making 20.
MacEwan struck first in the third period when Peyton Mages scored with less than two minutes left in regulation, assisted by Jordan Brown and Ana Djordjevic. Calgary answered before time ran out, as Lawrence tied the game with seconds remaining on a play set up by Caitlyn Perlinger and Kyla Mitenko.
Overtime solved nothing. Cope made five saves in the extra frame, including four on MacEwan's late pushes, to send the game to a shootout. Mitenko and Mikayla Blomquist both scored for the Dinos, while Cope stopped Mages and Ella Maternick to seal the win.
"That win felt good," said Mitenko, who had an assist and scored in the shootout. "It was definitely nice breaking a long losing streak."
The Dinos will face the University of Alberta Pandas in Edmonton next, with the puck set to drop at 7:00pm on Friday Nov, 6. MacEwan will play the Mount Royal University Cougars on Friday, Nov. 13.
