CALGARY – University of Calgary Dinos forward Sydney Mercier has been selected to represent Canada at the 2027 FISU Winter Universiade, U SPORTS announced Friday.
Mercier, from Saskatoon, joins Queen's forward Mikayla Cranney and Dalhousie goaltender Grace Beer as the latest additions to the women's hockey team. They join previously announced selections Gabrielle Santerre of Bishop's, Émilie Lussier of Concordia and Abigail MacKenzie of Saint Mary's.
The games run between Jan. 15-25 in Changchun, China and the team will be led by Dinos head coach Josh Gosling, who also serves as Canada's women's head coach.
"Representing Canada is an incredible honour, and we are confident these players understand the excitement, responsibility and pride that comes with representing our country and our league," Gosling said.
Mercier is making her second trip to the FISU winter games. She scored four points and posted a +10 rating in five games for Canada at Torino 2025, where Canada won silver.
The 23-year-old had 12 goals and seven assists for 19 points with the Dinos in 2025-26. She was named both the U SPORTS and Canada West rookie of the year in 2022-23 and earned a spot on both all-rookie teams. Mercier was also an Academic All-Canadian in 2024-25.
She is in her fifth and final season with the Dinos, and has begun the 2026 season by registering four goals and four assists across the opening eight games.
