CALGARY – After a dramatic draw Saturday, the University of Calgary Dinos women's field hockey team was unable to manage a comeback on Sunday afternoon, falling 3-0 to the University of Victoria Vikes at Hawkings Field.
The first quarter, similar to Saturday, started out slow. One area of concern in the opening frame came when Dinos goalkeeper
Tayler Guy went down with what appeared to be a lower-body injury. After a brief timeout, Guy was able to stay in the contest.
The second quarter opened quickly from the Vikes offence when Erin Dawson was able to beat Guy and give her team the first lead of the game. Calgary looked poised to respond to the opener minutes later when
Jenna Bower was left all alone in front of the Victoria goal, only to be denied by a highlight-worthy diving save from Robin Fleming.
The next action in the game came in the fourth quarter from a beautiful cross crease pass again to Erin Dawson who had a tap in to put the Vikes up 2-0.
Despite the Dinos trying to push for the tying goals late in the game with a pulled goalie, they were held to very limited chances and the Vikes made use of the open goal to make it a 3-0 final.
"We played two good periods this weekend," said Dinos head coach
Roel Van Maastrigt of his team's efforts. "Those two periods were really good and that something we are going to build on."
The Dinos will rest up next weekend on a bye week and then head to B.C. to take on the UBC Thunderbirds on Oct. 5 and Oct. 6. Victoria will also face the Thunderbirds in Vancouver, with that series coming next weekend.
